I stayed here with a a group or 27, so we had the whole place to ourselves and were very well cared for. Breakfast, dinner, and a small sack lunch were all provided, though that may have been by special arrangement with Simon, the manager. The meals are good, the staff competent and welcoming, and the gardens fabulous. All the rooms are on the ground level with no more than a few steps, though some are reached by narrow stepping-stone pathways. Rooms in the main building appear to be wheelchair-accessible.

While it shares the whole country's susceptibility to power outages and water shortages, their diesel generators and private wells - and the staff's great sense of humor - make those an adventure instead of a crisis.

This is the perfect home base for any size family or group exploring the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe. Give Simon a call!

The accommodations are a mix of rooms in the main building and rooms in various other small buildings, including some delightful rondavels and a conchshell spiral (see photos). Each room or group of connected rooms has its own bath, the detached buildings have kitchenettes, and some suites have a sitting room. The main building has a small pub, a dining room, a large lounge, a lovely courtyard, ample verandas, and a swimming pool out back.

While there are no resources to maintain the vast botanical gardens, the flower beds surrounding the flowerbeds are lovingly tended and delightful. They are even practical, providing edible nasturtium flower garnishes, for example, for our dinner plates. While no longer tended, the extensive grounds of the botanical garden are laid out in "rooms" of plantings that still delight the eye (and nose). A resident monkey troupe and numerous bird species add movement and more color to the scenery.

If you love gardens, birdwatching, and scenic walks, this is a must-stay place. If you love full-service pampering, this is also the place. If you want your privacy and control over your schedule and eating, this too is the place.

Scattered in the Nyanga hills, there are some incredible rests of the colonial period. A few "gems" lost in space and in time: if your heart is strong enough, there you can breath the same atmosphere from 100 years. In the picture, you may appreciate the carefully kept garden of Rhodes Nyanga Hotel. I've been there with a couple of Mozambican friends and I can still remember the strong impression (though perfectly disguised) caused by our presence among the staff and the hosts. Nobody was ready to imagine some "Blacks" would come to such a place!
