 | Dubuque Reviews | Tips 1 - 6 of 6 | | Karen and I stayed at Julien Inn for four nights in August, 2006, when I came to Dubuque for a Book Fair. We felt it was a very good choice. reasonably priced, and located downtown within walking distance of many of the city's attractions. There has been a hotel here at the corner pf 2nd & Main Street in Dubuque since 1839, making it the oldest hotel in the state. The original structure, just four stories high, was the first building visible to travelers entering Dubuque from across the Mississippi. The hotel, which has been rebuilt and remodeled several times, is named for Julien Dubuque, a Canadian fur trapper who was the first non-native settler in Iowa. Among the rich and famous who have stayed here are Abraham Lincoln , Ulysses S. Grant, Mark Twain and William "Buffalo Bill" Cody. During the prohibition era, the notorious gangster Al Capone owned the hotel. In 1962, the Julien Hotel was purchased by the current ownership and after extensive remodeling, was re-opened as the present-day Julien Inn. We had a small but comfortable room with a view of the Mississippi River. The hotel also has a good restaurant, and is within there are other good restaurants nearby. Leave a Comment

I really enjoyed my stay here at this hotel. The rooms are great especially the corner ones and the game room is also a plus. The pool is not huge, but it's better than most big pools because the water is actually warm and there aren't any crowds. The breakfeast is filling and has a waffle maker, doughnuts, and anything else you might expect to find. The staff is friendly and the computer, in the lobby is open most of the time. The location is good too, it is right next to Lowe's, Walmart, Hobby Lobby, and many other stores. If you are planning a trip to Dubuque, I recommend you stay here.
