THE YEKATIT 12 SQUARE MONUMENT
This grand monument commemorate the wholesale 3-day massacre of Ethiopians by the Italian Army in 1936. 2 pro-Ethiopia Eritreans named Abrham Deboch and Moges Asgedom attempted to assassinate the Italian Vice-Roy Marshal Grazziani. The white obelisk has reliefs showing the massacre and the Imperial funeral accorded to the remains of the victims by Emperor Haile Selassie following liberation.

    ADDIS ABABA MUSEUM
This is a fantastic museum, if you can find it. Housed in a huge ramshackle house of a minor royal, it tells the story of the founding of Addis Ababa in 1886. Pictures are strictly forbidden. Don’t ask how I got these. The exhibits and photos show how a Polish advisor to Emperor Menelik suggested Addis Ababa as the future site of the Ethiopian capital. It was high enough to avoid malaria, had fertile ground and lots of water. Eucalyptus trees were imported because they grow fast and could meet the needs of a new capital. The area was also blessed by healing hot springs.

Please note: the guide will demand a ‘gift’ at the end of the tour. Don’t do it. Tell him you need to go to a bank and you will be back.

    ETHNOLOGICAL MUSEUM
This is probably the best museum in Ethiopia. It is housed within Haile Selassie's former palace and surrounded by the beautiful gardens of Addis Ababa University. It contains an amazing amount of exhibits and charts the history of Ethiopia. It also displays traditional life in various tribes from birth until death. The sheer amount of costumes, weapons, musical instruments and household items through history is staggering. It also contains Haile Selassie's bedroom and bathroom. There are even small exhibits on currency, modern art and politics. This is a must see here in Addis.

Unfortunately photography is strictly forbidden inside and they take your camera off you. Don’t even try it.

They have a small gift shop with English books and even postcards.

    THE SINK EXPERIMENT
What is the sink Experiment? Scientifically water going down a sink will rotate counter clockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern hemisphere. I set out to conduct this experiment for Virtual Tourist here in Addis Ababa, which is in the Northern hemisphere. This is due to the Coriolis Effect, a force caused by the rotation of the Earth. Guess what? IT’s A MYTH! I found that I could get the water to go in either direction just by diverting the water slightly. Often it ran in the ‘wrong’ direction. Don’t believe it? Come for a visit and try it for yourself!

Africa Hall is on Menelik II Ave - an imposing symbol of African independence and optimism. It houses the headquarters of the UN Economic Commission for Africa. The huge stained glass windows depict the suffering of the people of Africa which is the work of Afework Tekle. Unfortunately I was unable to view the interior as security was on high alert, maybe next time

    Meskel Square
To get to anywhere in ADDIS you must pass thru this square. Formerly known as Revolution Square in the era of the Derg it is more of an opening traffic area than a grand space. Tall hotels and government facades line the north side and there are concrete viewing stands on the opposite. The tourist office is here but is very sparse. The Addis Ababa Museum also borders the perimeter but not noticeably. There is no need to linger, unless you want to get knocked over!

    Lenin Square
Another but more lush and verdant space, Lenin Square runs into the wide tree-lined Menelik Avenue. Africa Hall, the UN Headquarters and the Hilton abut this square. I couldn't see any sign of Lenin though... In fact the Palace, Trinity Cathedral, Parliament and the Museums are all along or off this thoroughfare. It is a swanky part of town even with the goat herds grazing in the undergrowth...that brings you back to Ethiopia!
