Holymen-Holy Trinity
The atmosphere is filled with white robed holy men chanting and reciting from books. The medieval orthodoxy is reverent and reverberates to the smell of pleasant frankin-scented incense.

The Mercato
The largest commercial bazaar in Africa this are comprises grid after grid of shops, arcades and stalls selling everything from millet to machine guns! Its safe with the usual precautions when in large market. It would be advisable to walk around with a local as they can navigate the endless warren of shops with radar stealth. But dont despair its easy to circumnavigate and figure out if you have enough time. Everyone knows where it is and they all go there...don't miss it.

    Train Station
The main train station is located at the end of Churchill Avenue. Like any major transit point there is always that aire of voyage and expectant discovery, this place is no different. Painted a peaceful yellow it reflects the colonial style of the italian occupation...though in that unique abyssinian way....take a stroll around

    The Museums
There are two museums worth seeking out while in ADDIS, luckily they are both on the road to Arat Kilo and Entoto Hills in the North of Addis...dont worry everyone will know where you want to go if you just say Museums...

    #1 The National Museum
This one contains the famous hominid woman 'Lucy' who is over 3.5million years old. You can take photos. The remains are in the centre of a square room, located in an octagonal shaped glass 'showcase'....thought it would be more spectacular...but the history definitely is!
On the other floors there are statues and monuments from the Axumite and pre-Christian eras.
The grounds are stunningly green and distant from the noisy city around.

    #2 the Ethnographic Museum
Further up and located in the main campus of Addis Ababa University is this great little place. It isa former royal chateau and houses ceremoniuos regalia and royal wear. The upper floors are dedicated to Ethiopian artists. The rooms are light and airy and all have a view. Remember to get a guide, they are cheap and embellish the exhibits.

    The Tomb of Haile Selassie
The final resting place of Haile Selassie- great emperor of ethiopia- is located in the menelik mausoleum in the church sanctum....

On the outside the faithful pray in the company of other 'great' robed orthodox priests....

    Parliament
As you head north towards arat kilo the turning to trinity cathedral is on your right....you cant miss it. However you can miss the imperceptible clock tower of the Parliament.
The photo was taken incognito as it is a breach of national security to phtograph this and othr government buildings, notably the palace...over the road...you cant see anything thru all the foliage anyways!

    Holy Trinity Church
The Church known as Kiddist Selassie lies of Entoto Road in the north of the city. It was begun in 1933 under the auspices of Haile Selassie and is the largest orthodox sturcture & church in this religious nation.
The mural scenes on the wall are as much part of religion as they are documents of Ethiopian history. The Royals thrones are found inside and in 2000 the emperors remains were finally entombed at his church.

  • Address: Off Entoto road
  • Directions: You need a car and driver to reach here. It is good to check out the local travel agencies which are all google-able to arrrange your day-private tour of Addis. Locally a taxi but even a minibus can get you here with some walking....still urban

The other facades of Trinity- Kiddist Selassie
The Church of the Holy Trinity was founded by Emperor Menelik II soon after he moved his imperial capital from the hills Mt. Entoto down to Addis Ababa. The original church, built of wood with intricate carvings, was constructed with the help of artists from India. The structure begun in 1928 was completed in 1942, following a lull in construction during the Italian occupation.

    The outside......
The approach to the church is just as captivating with colorfully wrapped artisans and stall owners squatting around religious trinkets. The multi-hued umbrellas used at the Timkat festival in the NewYear can be bought and are seen in evryday use here...

    The Lion of Ethiopia
The great Lion of Judah is the seal of the Emperor of Ethiopia. It was found in the centre of the national tri-color flag until it was replaced in the 80s by the military Derg's coat of arms and then in the 90s by the judaic yellow pentagram.
For all purposes the Lion remains the emblem of Haile Selassie as he marches eastwards. Two stone replicas I found while walking around Addis is a smaller one in the front courtyard of the Railway Station and another Larger Leo halfway down Churchill Avenue in front of a commercial bank (on left as you walk away from rail station)... They are indeed great iconic photos and emblems of Ethiopia..
