Assaha al Khaddra: A tour on Assaha al Khaddra at night.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Tripolitan families like to walk on this big square on late evenings and night, enjoying the breeze from the sea, have a ride on the horse pulled coaches or take photos of their kids with a gazelle or another animal. Going back from the Medina to the hotel I liked to walk across that square, look at the people, trying to feel what was going on. Danger! to get to this square you have to go across the heavy car traffic, and like in many Mediterranean countries the walker has few, very few rights. . . .
Notice, the horses are either black or white but not black and white like the taxis, but they do the same job!

    Cafe Salim: open air cafe

  • Since the revolution in 1969, Tripoli doesn't have any real nightlife such as you might find in other capital cities. Cafe Salim is about as good as it gets and it is where quite a few locals and foreign visitors gather to sit and drink tea or smoke hubble-bubble around sunset. From here you can sit under the elegant arches and look across at the former Italian cathedral and watch the people and traffic moving around Algeria Square. It is cold sitting here in the winter months, however. A large glass of mint tea costs 1 LD.

This is one of the most relaxing places to sit and rest your feet in Tripoli, after a day spent sightseeing.

I never knew the name of this...
  • Tip Rating:
  • I never knew the name of this little place, not even sure it had one. Not many of the Expats knew it and not many libyans admitted to knowing it!!! It was a lovely little courtyard type cafe/bar (obviously no booze) but very bizarre... My friends and I were convinced that it was some sort of brothel, here you would see girls on their own or with friends sat at tables having a drink and a laugh and approaching the local guys or being approached and then going off with them. We were told that the girls were probably from other parts of North Africa and definately not Libyan. However we were always treated well and never hassled and never approached by the girls, we just used to drink our fruit cocktails, smoke the hubbly bubbly and watch it all going off. It was all rather mad for Libya.
The only place where you would see Arab Women out having a good time and wearing western clothes and chatting to men.

Just regular jeans and T-shirts etc.

A very pleasant way of having a good night out in Tripoli is to visit a couple of Hotels and enjoy having a drink in the bar or foyer area.
Other great way is to go on the internet in one of the hotels internet cafe or else contact our V.T. member OMRAN who can guide you in this area as he have one of his own.

    Hubbly Bubbly pipes and sunsets
Cafe sited along the sea front - from Green Square, face the sea and walk along the right hand road. You'll come to a small park like area on the side of the road. Here you can drink coffeee, cold drinks and order hubbly bubbly pipes. In the evening the area is full of people walking along the promenade - mostly locals and their families. A great way to relax!

Sah al Jadra: Only thing to do there
Most people who are up at night go to Sah al Jadra which is basically the center of the city and drink coffee ot tea and smoke cigarettes. You can also walk around shara wahad September which is the main shopping street where there are restaurants and cafes open late.

    Sunset: Sunset
In a dry country such as Libya, nightlife is NOT one of the reasons for visiting.

About the most interesting activity, apart from eating (and Libya is not known for its gourmet food) is to watch the sunset. Along the promenade you can get some great views over the water.

    The sky: Birds
Every evening at dusk, hundreds and thousands of starlings would congregate in the sky above Green Square, just circling above. It was ana absolutely amazing sight!
