The Nature Sanctuary

  • The Nature Sanctuary, situated between Old Town and City Centre, is an indigenous woodland reserve covering 150 Hectares (370 of acres), complete with the Lingadzi River and a variety of birds and mammals. There is a wildlife information centre and a number of walking trails through the woods.

    Dr. Kabula is a Malawian "witch doctor". His small office is in a corner of Lilongwe’s central market. If he is not busy with a patient he’ll be happy to invite you into his office and have a chat. He is a well educated man with an interesting history. Dr. Kabula became a witch doctor after a career as a security guard at the French embassy and the Reserve Bank of Malawi. During that time he dispensed his medicine to his colleagues illegally. He was trained since his childhood by his grandfather, who even told him how to cure Aids.
    “In those days it was called Kaliwondewonde”- which means ‘getting thinner and thinner’ – and it was very rare. But it was the same thing that we see so often today” (Guide to Malawi)

    Not everybody can become a witch doctor: a special licence like a work permit is required, which every Sin´ganga has to carry with him.
    Many people from all over the world sent letters to him.

  • Lilongwe Sanctuary is currently being redeveloped to provide an environmental centre of excellence in the region. i spent a couple of weeks there volunteering and shifting earth, building fences etc.
    the pace of change is remarkable. definitely worth a visit .. give it some support!

    The airport that has it all....
    Lots of different types of aircrafts, and a stunning, open views of the distant landscape!

    And, best of all, you can claim to have 'seen' another country! Okay, 'set foot in' another country.

    But, you won't get your passports 'docked' here! For that you need to go to Namanga (in a different 'zone')
