Relatively few will need to rely on the local bus, coach or train services detailed here, despite their efficiency. By air Windhoek has excellent international air links with the UK, Germany, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia. From Windhoek there are regular flights to: Katima Mulilo N$1,249 Lüderitz N$1,059 Mokuti Lodge N$830 Ondangwa N$819 Oranjemund N$1,179 Rosh Pinah N$1,129 Swakopmund N$489 Walvis Bay N$489 Travellers should note that Windhoek has two airports, and check which one is used for each of their flights. Windhoek Hosea Kutako International Airport is the gateway to the country. It is located about half an hour drive from Windhoek. Nice small airport, no need to queue, no hassle and even nice duty free store to spend your last local currency. Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane

Windhoek International Airport (Hosea Kutako International Airport) is about 40km outside the city. I am not sure as to what transport is available from the airport to the city (as friends came to fetch me at the airport). I flew with SAA from Johannesburg to Windhoek, it is a 2 hour flight. There is an 1 hour time difference in winter. Other carriers operating flights between Johannesburg and Windhoek: Air Namibia and British Airways. There are also flights between Cape Town and Windhoek. Theme: AirplanePhone: + 264 (0)62 702 402

Generally speaking, it is safe to take a cab in the city. It may cost you R5.5 per time from outside of town to downtown and cost you R10 to get off the town. One strange thing is that you have to share a cab with other people that you do not know. It may be a little unease for foreingers perhaps. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

The cheapest and easiest mode of transportation in Windhoek is a taxi. At the date of this tip the fee is N$6.50 (might go up soon due to fuel hike). Taxis are everywhere and you recognise them by the yellow taxi sign on or in the taxi. They also MUST have address details printed on the side of the car. When you get off at a point that's not a taxi rank, the charge is double. Also, taxi use is not exclusive, so the taxi driver wll pick up other passengers along the way who are travelling in the same direction as you. So, your ride might not be straightforward. You need to keep that in mind when you are going to important appointments. Unfortunately we do not have week passes etc. It's just a pay as you go thing. See my tourist trap tp on possible "issues" with taxis. Theme: Car/Motor Home

This is the bus and the best way to enter Namibia from South Africa. It leaves Capetown (US$73) at 13:00 and arrives in Windhoek next day at 6 in the morning. It's a double decker bus, very comfortable with nice stewardesses that offer you tea or coffee, several stops, A/C, blankets for the night.... Leave a Comment

Before you get really excited about travelling around Namibia by train, let me lower your expectations now. The train system is primarily designed for shipping freight and agricultural products. They travel VERY slowly and don’t go to many places. You may need more than one book. Notably they do go to Swakopmund, Walvis Bay, and Tsumeb. Unless you have a lot of time you may want to hire a car or take a bus instead. Leave a Comment

Outside of Windhoek and Swakopmund I never saw a single policeman or car anywhere in Namibia. Drive as fast as you want to, even on paved roads, except here. There is a heavy Police/Security presence here in Windhoek near buildings of National importance. There are also fixed and portable speed cameras here. I have pictures of the fixed ones. Also, do not jump red lights. A good piece of advice anywhere, but the cameras pick that up too. Take it easy in town and go nuts when you drive out of town. Leave a Comment

It is against the law in Namibia to drive while holding a telephone. It is also mandatory that all passengers wear belts and children be in appropriate seats. This is not just the law, it’s smart. In Windhoek and Swakopmund you risk a fine from the Police and it’s very easy to detect when your are violating either of these laws. Across the rest of Namibia violating either of these laws could easily get everyone seriously injured or dead. Wild animals love to run out in front of cars, especially at night. These are the big ones that can destroy cars and you. Don’t do it. Drive safe and smart and stay alive. Leave a Comment
