Particularly in markets people will crowd around you wanting you to buy things, whilst someone else slips there hand in you pocket. Be gracious but firm, and tell them to go away before they actually swarm you. Leave a Comment

Same as in most countries in Africa, I guess : be aware that as a tourist, you're the perfect victim for robbery. Try to avoid looking like a tourist as much as possible. If you can't hide it : try to look like a poor tourist. Always be alert.

Travelling by public bus is always a hazard in Africa. Firstly keep your eyes on where your luggage is going to be placed. Don't let them put it on the roof! When the bus stops to let people off, make sure you watch they don't take YOUR luggage. Buses break down constantly. Make sure you take drinks with you - but don't drink too much - no toilets along the way! No problem for the fellas, but difficult for the ladies! Leave a Comment

Usually I’m the kind of person to shrug off peoples “warnings” about traveling here and there, but Zim is different! This is a very dangerous place to explore on your own. I’ve driven myself through several African countries, and I won’t go here again unless accompanied by someone who knows exactly how to deal with the conditions there. Zimbabwe is a beautiful country, with a horribly repressive regime squeezing its people to death. Not surprisingly, many of the 80% who are unemployed and living under a 1000% inflation rate, turn to criminal means to survive. I’ve been assured by my friends there that things have only gone downhill since my visit 3 years ago.

Due to isolation of the current regime, and a general shortage of foreign currency this airline is as cash strapped as the rest of the country. Also Robert Mugabe seems to be using "his" national airline at good will whenever he chooses to go on a trip. If the aircraft are flying it is dangerous enough, but at times you may arrive at the airport to find that Uncle Bob is one his way to Cuba or China and takes the aircraft away from under your nose. On a lighter note the airline is in the Guiness Book of World Records for the scheduled flight with the least passengers - Dubai to Harare, one passenger boarded! Do I need to say more? HEALTH REQUIREMENTS You will have to get malaria prophylactics before entering Zimbabwe. When purchasing these, tell your doctor or pharmacist which areas in Zimbabwe you intend visiting. Start your course at least 24 hours before entering Zimbabwe and continue taking the pills for six weeks after leaving the country. If you suffer from side effects, try taking your malaria prophylactics at night after dinner. Precautionary measures that you can take to prevent contact with mosquitoes are: sleeping under a bed net or in a room/tent with mosquito proofing (remember to keep the flaps zipped at all times); spraying your accommodation with insecticide; making use of a mosquito-repelling lotion or stick; and wearing long-sleeved clothing, long trousers and socks when outside at night. Any person entering Zimbabwe from, or via, a yellow fever or cholera-infected area must be in possession of a valid International Certificate of Vaccination against yellow fever and/or cholera. Tetanus immunisation is recommended. Medical services within Harare and Bulawayo are very good. It is wise to bring with you any medicines which you may require. Medical insurance is strongly recommended INSURANCE We strongly recommend that you take out travel insurance, which includes curtailment and cancellation cover, as well as medical cover, upon confirming your booking. If you are coming on safari with Premier Destinations Africa, you will automatically be covered by our Emergency Evacuation Insurance, underwritten by Europ Assistance. This guarantees all reasonable, practical assistance in obtaining primary and/or emergency medical services for an insured person who suffers illness or injury. Please note that this is evacuation insurance only and does not replace the normal travel insurance which you need to purchase. Leave a Comment
