 | Chandigarh Flights and Airline Tips | Tips 1 - 10 of 10 | | Chadigarh is the capital of the Punjab and Haryana and is thus well connected by public buses. My friend and I arrived from Haridwar in Uttaranchal bu bus and then caught one to Kalka North of Chandigarh. The bus stand is located on the corner of Himalaya Marg and Udyog Path where sectros 17, 18, 21 and 22 intersect. You will be able to walk around and find the bus that I heading your way and usually you will take luggage on with you (everyone seems to put it in the aisles). If it is a standard bus you will pay your fare from a conductor-wallah on board but some buses (to Delhi) etc may run as express or luxury services and these tickets may need to be pre-paid. As for snacks etc, stops can be too frequent or not nearly frequent enough so I suggest that you buy a few goodies for the trip and take them on with you. Buses really are a great way to get around and not too much hassle really! Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

For some reason the auto rickshaws are blue in Chandigarh. They operate just like they do in most other places in India i.e. without the meter running, so you have to negotiate and agree on the fair with the driver before getting in. I took one from the station when I first arrived to my hotel in sector 22 and it cost Rs80 (bear in mind that the train station is some 8km away from the city centre). The only other one I took was from my hotel to the Capitol complex (approx 4km) and that costs Rs45. There is a pre-paid booth behind the bus station. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

I saw this double decker bus outside the Rock Garden and even though I didn't use it, I suppose its fairly useful for getting around as its both informative and cheap. Remember, Chandigarh is a large city and all the main sights are a fair distance apart from each other. A complete whole trip costs Rs25 (without getting on or off) and lasts an hour. If you wish to get off and then back on and only take half a day, it costs Rs50. For a full day, it costs Rs75. It runs in the summer from 9.30am-6.30pm and in the winter from 10am-5pm. It leaves from the parade ground in sector 17. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

Chandigarh is very well connected by train. I came here on the early Kalka Shatabdi (No. 2011) which left New Delhi station at 7.40am and arrived at 11.25am (was supposed to be 11am dead but I'll let them off!). A Chair Class seat cost Rs435 and you get plenty of legroom plus breakfast and tea/coffee. Leave a Comment

Most bus stations in India are pretty hectic places and Chandigarh's is no exception. I was staying nearby so it was very handy for me to simply take a bus to Kalka in order to take the Toy Train up to Shimla. The buses leaves leave roughly every hour and take approx an hour. There is one at 9.30am (the one I took) and another at 10.40am and it costs Rs17. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

Great story here - the idea of building a sculpture garden from waste was the brainchild of a gentleman who goes by the name of Nek Chand. He started the project as a hobby many years ago, clearing up part of a jungle to make a garden for himself. He kept his project a complete secret, often working late into the night, since it was started on land that was owned by the government. When the small garden was discovered by the authorities, it was debated wether to demolish the property to or just let it stay. Thankfully enough, his work was appreciated and a decision was taken to build a large sculpture garden with Mr Nek Chand at the helm of affairs. The garden was opened for public viewing in 1976. It now exhibits hundreds of human and animal forms, craftly sculpted out of regular city waste, such as broken earthenware, electrical items, drums, jute bags, broken glass, bottles, bangles, pebbles etc. It is difficult to capture the true feel of this garden in pictures - it is serene, spooky, dungeon like, mystical, almost like a dream, a fantasy land ... and a lot more. Chandigarh is also a great place to see some unique gardens - nothing like a brisk morning walk by the lake side or in one of the many gardens that are scattered across the city. Very few cities in India offer such a rich variety of Flora - streets lined with flowering trees - abundance of bright yellow, pink, red, orange and purple ... ummmm ... I could live here forever. The Bougainvillea Garden, is a 20 acre garden located in Sector 10. As the name suggests, the garden is devoted to hundreds of varieties of a Bougainvillea. The Zakir Rose Garden located in Sector 16, is the largest of its kind in Asia. It has nearly 17000 plants covering 1500 (!!!!) varities of roses. Leave a Comment

The Sukhna Lake is a large manmade lake located close to the Rock Garden at Chandigarh. The three square kilometre lake is the favoured picnic spot of Chandigarh families. Paddle boats can be hired at the boating club attached to the lake. There are a few shops located within the lake complex that sell souvenirs and handicrafts. There is also a cafe run by Chandigarh Tourism that serves good South Indian and Continental snacks. Leave a Comment

Yadavindra Gardens are located at Pinjore, about 20 kms from Chandigarh, on the road leading to Shimla. These stepped Mughal gardens are located on the foothills of the Shivalik ranges. Haryana Tourism runs a hotel and restaurant within the garden complex. The outer walls of the gardens are covered with thick creepers. The garden is believed to have been designed by Nawab Fidai Khan in the 17th century and the Mughal design of charbagh is evident in the descending streams of water running through the gardens. Many song and dance sequences from Indian movies of yesteryears have been filmed at the Pinjore gardens :) Leave a Comment Address: PinjoreDirections: On the Chandigarh-Simla road

The Cactus Garden is located in the twin city of Panchkula, about 5 km from Chandigarh. This well laid out garden has an astonishing collection of some very rare Cactii. Most of these have been gifted by Cactus lovers from all over the world. Leave a Comment Directions: Sector 5, Panchkula - 10 minutes drive from Chandigarh
