 | Chandigarh Things To Do | Tips 31 - 40 of 42 | | Popular Things To Do | Other Things To Do Tips | All Tips (42) The City Museum was established by the Chandigarh administration at the time of the 50th Anniversary of India's independence in December 1997. The purpose of setting up the museum was to collect, preserve and display the planning and architectural development that went into the unique urban designing of the city. The story is told through rare documents such as original sketches, maps, models, plans, photographs and letters. I found it particularly interesting as it mentioned about Ebenezer Howard who planned my home town, Welwyn Garden City in England. Open: Tues-Sun 9am-5pm. Closed Mondays. Admission: Rs5 for all visitors. Leave a Comment Address: Sector 10

The Rose Garden even in December had close to the 1500 varieties of roses in bloom. The rose garden is simply stunning and beautiful. All the rose beds are labeled with the name of each type of rose. For the horticulturist lover it would be a great treat to see so many types of roses in one place. Honestly, I never would have imagined that such a wide variety of roses would exist. It’s also a great opportunity to practice some microphotography. I took many close-up shots of individual buds and flowers. Leave a Comment

The Verka Milk Factory is a great place to stop for some flavored milk when you first enter Chandigarh. This sweetened Almond flavored milk brought back memories of childhood trips to India. The only difference the milk is now served in juice-type boxes, instead of the glass milk bottles I remember. The milk still tasted great, but I missed the glass bottle. Leave a Comment

The last place I expected to see the Eiffel Tower would be here in India but I suppose they built it in honour of Frenchmen Le Corbusier who planned the city. You'll notice, beside the tree on the left, 3 pieces of stone perched on top of each other on the path. After visiting the nearby City Museum and Art Gallery, a cricket match was in full swing and these pieces of rock acted as stumps. A typical case of ingenuity over availability that you'll find all over India. I watched the game for quite some time and the Eiffel Tower was used as a grandstand with people sitting on it. The law-executing monument is the largest and tallest of the three edifices in the Capitol Complex which is located in sector 1. Built during 1953-59, it is shaped like an eight-storeyed concrete slab, with its distinctive brise-soleil-louvered screen of deeply sculptured two-storey porticos in the centre, housing the offices of ministers. There are many water falls in the Rock garden and, as it was very hot day when we were there, i was happy to step into the water and to have some refreshment. :) Leave a Comment

This man-made 3km long lake was created in 1958 with the intension of the creators of Chandigarh to offer it to the citizens so that they can be at one with the lake and its environments and its tranquility shall be guaranteed by banning noises (which should be done countrywide!). Paddle boats are available to hire for Rs30 (34p) for 30 mins, so I decided to take one out and have a bit of fun. So I paid in the booth and walked down to the waters edge and donned a red life jacket and got into one. I paddled out to the opposite shore and was receiving a lot of looks from the locals especially girls who I waved to and smiled at and they did the same and giggled! Leave a Comment

This place is pretty different from your usual tourist attraction. It's a garden decorated with all kinds of broken stuff made into beautiful objects and gorgeous designs, made by one man - Nek Chand. This picture is of little men made from broken crockery. There are other things made from broken bangles, broken bottles, broken porcelain (ie. toilets and sinks). You walk along a path that winds through different "landscapes". You can stop to sit and admire the displays. The entry fee is tiny. Leave a Comment
