At one point I got hungry, walking in Chandni Chowk,in the middle of afternoon, and I looked for a place for a quick meal. In a small “pedestrian” street, I came across a place where a cook was baking chappati outside a very little restaurant; I stepped in, was the attraction of the place for a few seconds, then sat down at a plastic table, looked at what people were eating and, by gestures explained, I wanted the same: dal, chappati, onions and chilli. The dal was wonderful fresh, probably far from “high” cuisine, but in the surroundings, it exactly fitted and was spicy as I like it, lots of strong peppered curry, and sweet lentils; a piece of chilli from time to time and if it was too hot. . . killed the fire with onion and chappati. I had a nice “fast food”, and my stomach proved “reliable” as I drank water from the jug . . . . I know, here I can tell I am lucky having no problems with “exotic” food or water; I do not know if they had bottled beverages in that restaurant. The surroundings were exotic too, as I could watch very close the cook and people walking or working on the street. Food and show in the same time! Fried rice is something common in my tongue since can be found easily as one of in Chinese eateries in my country. So, soon this Tibetan fried rice vegetarian becomes my fave during stay at Tibetan Colony, New Aruna Nagar. The fried rice contains many kind of veggie. From green peas, carrot, to mushroom. Added with diced ginger. Then about beef chilli dry is beef fried in butter, soya sauce, fresh tomatoes, green and red paprikas. So yum yum!!!! A traditional Tibetan bread. Hot, fresh from the oven and served with butter and jam [both strawberry and marmelade, I like :)]. Additional suggestion; added with Tibetan lemon tea will be nice. Chicken thenkthuk or beef thenkthuk is one dish meal. Just like capcay in Indo-Chinese lingo. Contain with veggie, mushroom and diced beef or chicken, diced of omelette and something like noodles, made from rice flour. Served hot with dry chili pepper and soya sauce. Hmmm, a delicious company for rainy nights :) This one dish meal also can be found at Ladakh, State of Jammu and Kashmir. In my lingo, it's so called pangsit. Like chicken or beef dumplings and served hot as appetizer with or without chicken broth and diced celery. Momo is traditional Tibetan steamed bread [un-grilled]. In my country, quite similar with Chinese 'Mantau'. This Momo served with beef chili dry. Also can be used as a subsitution for steamed rice. The ITDC Ashok Hotel is not a place I'd pick to stay, but there is one great reason to go there--the food. This hotel is immense and has several restaurants, including what I think is one of the best places in Delhi to get South Indian food. Head all the way to the basement (a long way down) and follow the sound of lots of kids. The South Indian restaurant is very popular with families--it's not upscale, although it is comfortable, and the food is great and reasonably priced.
If you spend enough time in Delhi, after a while all that meat and all those heavy sauces will start to weigh you down. I am usually hankering for a good dosa or vegetarian thali after about three days. This is the place to get it! Bukhara, in the ITC Maurya Sheraton Hotel, is one of the best places to eat meat in Delhi. Try the roast lamb, which is practically a religious experience. I also cannot get enough of their makhani dal, which is some of the richest food you'll ever eat. If you can't fit in enough at one sitting, don't worry--they sell it in cans to take home. If it weren't so heavy, I'd fill my whole suitcase with it.
