  • Chapatti, onions, dal, chili and water! perfect! - Delhi
    Chapatti, onions, dal, chili
    and water! perfect!

At one point I got hungry, walking in Chandni Chowk,in the middle of afternoon, and I looked for a place for a quick meal. In a small “pedestrian” street, I came across a place where a cook was baking chappati outside a very little restaurant; I stepped in, was the attraction of the place for a few seconds, then sat down at a plastic table, looked at what people were eating and, by gestures explained, I wanted the same: dal, chappati, onions and chilli. The dal was wonderful fresh, probably far from “high” cuisine, but in the surroundings, it exactly fitted and was spicy as I like it, lots of strong peppered curry, and sweet lentils; a piece of chilli from time to time and if it was too hot. . . killed the fire with onion and chappati. I had a nice “fast food”, and my stomach proved “reliable” as I drank water from the jug . . . . I know, here I can tell I am lucky having no problems with “exotic” food or water; I do not know if they had bottled beverages in that restaurant.
The surroundings were exotic too, as I could watch very close the cook and people walking or working on the street. Food and show in the same time!

Dilli Haat has outdoor tables and food from all over India. Great to stop and have a drink and something to eat after wandering around.

Indian sweets are famous! if you have a sweet tooth, this is the place to be! Most sweets are some combination of milk and other products.

    Try these mouth-watering delicacies.

WARNING: Some of these shops are not hygienic, so it is best to ask a local VTer for advice on where to get the best sweets.

  • Anything and everything, but mainly garlic naan! I love the way there are small pieces of garlic you can see on top of the naan (naan is a delicious chewy flatbread). Have been eating lots of delicious homecooked foods, loved Radhika's potato and cumin curry! And the Southern Indian potato and coriander dish (pictured!) that Husain's cook made one morning! The food here really hits the spot!

  • Fennel seeds after your meal... you will get these along with some sugar too sometimes, at all restaurants. Take a handful and chew well, they help with digestion.

Not at just one restaurant, but at many, many places we visited the food was served in these stainless steel bowls and plates.

Idli and coconut chutney. Idli is white steamed rice shaped things... ummm and you dip those into the smooth coconut and coriander misture. Heavenly! Had them at several places, the best was here where Husain took me... Where was that now...?! :)
