 | Delhi Through the city Reviews | Tips 1 - 10 of 37 | | Delhi has roughly 2 main areas: The Old core of the city, called Old Delhi, in the north, is the dedalus of narrow streets around the Red Fort and the Jami Masjid mosque. The new part of the city is crossed by huge ordered avenues and big monuments and government buildings. This area around Connaught Place and the Gate of India is called New Delhi. Leave a Comment |
This is the Delhi you find on the streets, in the bazaars, in the interaction with its people. You can't say "I have been there..." for any place if you haven't chosen to interact with the people. Paharganj's Main Bazaar, touristy but still very real in its setting is a good starting point. The presence of other tourists around makes you feel more comfortable. Connaught place is the city center, here one can find all the shops one needs. Be it a continental food restaurant, an espresso cafe, an English bookshop, everything. Dilli Haat (i am not so sure about the spelling) is also a great place to spend a day. It combines handicrafts and food from different parts of India. Chandni Chowk is another great bazaar. In its "dodgy" looking, convoluted alleys you might get lost, you might think "I am crazy to be here" but in the end you will be rewarded, I am sure. If you are a good looking woman, chances are that you are gonna get your behind pinched more than once! Leave a Comment |

You can't leave Delhi without paying tribute to its great sights, right? Of course not, especially since most of them offer a great escape from the noise, the pollution and the crowds. India Gate, the symbol of india's independence. Situated in the center of a large, open green park and facing the presidential palace is like Paris' Arc du Triomph. Humayun's Tomb, the mughal king's resting place. Surrounded by magnificent and peaceful gardens, the only thing that breaks the quiet is the sound of the crows and the eagles flying above. Red Fort, a theater of the old glory and the majestic parades. Try to imagine this place when it was still inhabited by powerful maharajas and their mighty elephants. Enjoy the peace and quiet of the gardens. And lot more... Leave a Comment |
Is on the streets that you will start to feel the real smell of India, and Old Delhi is the greatest place where to start!. The streets are simply black, durty, fullfilled of people and cowes wherever, people that calls you billion times, altough you do not watch them...children that simply walk up and down to those streets, chai seller on the streets, biri smokers on the streets.... This is India... All is done on the street, and if you do not watch it, or at least try to understand it, I guess you are losing something on the way!. Leave a Comment |
In the opposite of the streets of Old Delhi, very small and crowded, Connaught Palace is the touristic and shopping center in New Delhi, with big streets, not so crowded and with less traffic and pollusion. You will immediately detect the difference beetween the two parts of the city. Leave a Comment |

First I thought to discover Delhi by myself. Deffinitly a bad idea for me. I booked a city tour by bus for 70 INR. Only one problem, the government of India wanted all the busses to change from diesel to fuel so no bus on this day. I rebooked taking a car for 600 INR and so it was possible to see exactly what I wanted to see and not all the touristic places. Leave a Comment |
The road-rules... Delhi roads are test of your nerves! Would never ever dream of driving here, though after a week, I did sort of start to relax sort-of (a little!) and gasp somewhat less as we were almost swerved into for the 1000th time!!! This was a unique experience indeed. Here are those cows on the road you have heard about before probably. Actually not as common a sight as I expected. Wished I had taken some pics when we drove through one neighbourhood that was full of them!! Next time. Leave a Comment |
Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker were assigned the task of constructing a new Delhi as Britain's new imperial capital of India. The Jewel in the Empire's crown... Their main objective was to produce an architecture that borrowed from local traditions and yet produced a statement of colonial power. The new city was designed around the central line which ran through the middle of the Raj Path from the gates of Rashtrapati Bhawan to India Gate. Leave a Comment |
Sight Seeing I dont know about you but while traveling I consider site seeing as some kind of an obligation. Although in the end it mostly turns out to be buildings and musesms parks and such things. So according to my strategy city should be lived in but site seeing should be completed as soon as possible and with as little effort as possible. Delhi Tourism organizes 'Dilli Darshan' (Delhi Visit) day trips and are an extremely convenient way of checking out the monuments places mentioned in travel guides. These are: Buildings/ Strctures: Red Fort, Lotus Temple, Qutab Minar, Old Fort, India Gate Museums: National Museum, Doll Museum, Rail Museum Memorials: of Mahatma Gandhi (RajGhat), Indira Gandhi (Shakti Sthal), Jagjeevan ram Entertainment Parks: Appu Ghar, Wet n Wild (Gurgaon), Fun n Food (Gurgaon) Planetarium: Nehru Planetarium and Museum (Teen Murti) Delhi Tourism buses cover most of the popular sites.
