 | Delhi General Warnings Reviews | 1 - 10 of 14 | | The safer way to get to the city from the airport is to go outside and go stra8 to the small office for the prepaid taxi. You simply go there, tell to the man where you do want to go and you pay immediately. Then he will give you the receipt with the numebr of the taxi and he will drive you to the final destination. It is very simple and moreover you will not fall in trouble with huge ammounts to pay to the taxi driver.. ):- Leave a Comment

If there is one thing you have to learn as quick as possible is this: Bargain! Regaurding whatever, from stuff, to food, to drinks to also the Guesthouses. When somebody is asking 100, you gotta pay not more then 30! There are only few items that has a fix prices, like BIRI, which costs 5Rs!!! Reguarding tghe GH you should not ask for the 30% of the inquiry, but for sure go down to the first price called by the owner. Leave a Comment

It happends a very strange thing to me. I book a bus ticket for the route and I paid normally the rate. Once we were dropping on the bus, the man told us “you do have to pay for looking forward your bags”…and what tha hell does it mean?! So, despite the normal rate they will ask you for some Rupee for looking forward your bags…When this will happen, DO NOT pay anything and go stra8 to the manager, he will settle the matter… Leave a Comment

Watch out for your money. Keep it nearby where nobody will notice it. When you buy something, check if the money you get back is correct. Most Indian people who never went to school have trouble counting. Also some count wrong on purpose. Also you should watch out with food and drinks. Never eat at dirty looking restaurants or little foodstals at the road. Don't drink tabwater, buy mineral water in a sealed bottle. Mineral water from the brand 'Yes', 'Evian' and 'Bisleri' are alright. Watch out in trafic. Getting accross the street can be hard sometimes. Roads are often bumpy and full of holes. People often drive reckless. Leave a Comment

An email or phone call to your hotel can ensure that you are picked up from the airport in Delhi. This saves you troubles. I spoke to people who had even had problems with the prepaid taxi. He told them their hotel was full and took them to some dive in the middle of nowhere and it cost them lots of money. Getting picked up allows you to get your bearings before braving the streets and swindles of Delhi. Leave a Comment

Listen! Do you want to visit the 'State Emporia'? They are shops representing the specific style of the states of India, and a great place to buy souvenirs if you are on your way home, and forgot to buy them when you where around. (Add a couple of hundred percents to the price, though) If you stay in the Paharganj area the drivers will surely drop you off at another place also called emporia something. (I think Cotton state emporia perhaps...) Be persistent! It is NOT the right place! The thing is, if you even go inside, the drivers get a gallon of petrol, and if you buy anything, they get comission, thats why they all take you here. After having been taken here for the millionth time, I managed to wringe this information out of a regretful rickshaw driver (my voice may have been quite highly pitched by then), before he finally took us to the right place. So make sure you get dropped off at the right place, because the state emporias are really cool!! Leave a Comment

Prepare yourself for all kinds of danger. Beware of pickpockets and con artists on the streets. Food and water can be dangerous. Don’t drink the water, only mineral water from a bottle and check the seal. Never buy water bottles with funny labels. Don’t eat any food that isn’t cooked. Fresh vegetables might be washed in unhealthy water so take care. Keep your money, passport and other travel document safely on your person underneath your clothes and watch out while changing money. Do it discreetly, never on the streets. Always count your change after buying something. When taking a taxi always fix the price before you go. Ask at your hotel what the right price should be.

Women are advised to not to move around unescorted after 9 pm. Taxis and Auto Rickshwas have a propensity of going around in circles before taking you to destination to make a few extra bucks. Leave a Comment

Of course besides the obvious dangers of food and drinks, be careful at the airport with the guys offering a ride to your destination whether they are legal or not. They will try to rip you off. If you take a pre-paid taxi DO NOT GIVE your receipt to the driver until you reach your destination. Otherwise you are in for troubles. Another warning: People spreading excrement on your shoes and just by magic there is a shoe-cleaning guy not far who offers to clean it for you. Beware this is a trick to rob you. Just keep on walking (with the excrement on) and find a spot to clean it yourself. Happens anywhere specially in Connaught Place or any tourist areas. Leave a Comment

The running of the bulls is a cakewalk compared to the traffic assisted suicide one practically commits every time a foot is put into the streets of Delhi! Often it is not so bad as the traffic (like in Old Delhi) is blocked - so you can climb over rickshawas, carts, camels and Ambassadors to the other side of the street. The big problem is the Janpath area where the traffic can move fast and the streets are wide and curbs high, like 30 or 40 cm high. Leave a Comment
