GUPTAN IRON PILLAR
In the middle of the courtyard of the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque stands an iron pillar - 7.2 meters high - which dates back to the 4th century. The pillar originally stood in Vishnupadagiri, a spot nearby to Bhopal. The original purpose of the pillar was astronomical in nature while an inscription on the pillar states it was a flagstaff raised in honor of the Hindu god Vishnu in memory of the Gupta king Chandragupta II (375-413). The pillar is 98% wrought iron, withstanding corrosion for over 1600 years, a testament to early Indian metallurgical skills.

After Iltutmish cam Ala-ud-din Khilji and he added the large, mostly ruined, complex just outside the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque to the west. The building housed a madrassa or Islamic teaching school. Inside the jumble is Ala-ud-din’s grave.

Connaught Place
From the descriptions in the guide books, Connaught place was supposed to be somewhat stately. Not true. It may be the heart of New Delhi, but that backside would be a more apt description. On the picture below there people actually living on top of these small buildings in mini shanty towns.

  • Address: Connaught Place Inner Circie
  • Directions: The Metro is the easiest way to get here.

I'll just say quite the same i said in my into page... Old Delhi was the best to check it out once you're in Delhi...New Delhi is tottaly westernized...and Old Delhi still has some atmospheric vibes on the streets...no, i'm not saying that Delhi is a great place to go, but most travelers have to pass through it, due international flights and so on...anyways, if you find yourself in Delhi...them its worth spending some time in Old Delhi !!

If one victory column is great, than two would be so much better or so must have thought Ala-ud-din Khilji who had construction on another tower that would have been twice as high as the Qutb Minar. Building only got as high as the first story, some 24.5 meters high, which was also about the time of Ala-ud-din’s death.

Built as a gateway to the Qutb Minar complex in 1311 by Ala-ud-din Khiliji, this is one of the first Indian buildings constructed with Islamic arches (trimmed with at Hindu lotus bud fringe).

Mahatma Gandhi is the most famous person of modern-day India. He was at the head of the movement which finally brought independence to India at the end of World War II from Britain. It was here at the Rajghat that Gandhi was cremated following his assassination in January 30, 1948. A black granite pedestal is inscribed with Gandhi’s last words, “He Ram!” (“Oh God!”). Across the street from the memorial is the Gandhi National Museum where you can find out much more about the man, his life and philosophies. Nearby to this memorial was also where another pair of Gandhis were cremated - Indira and Rajiv.

    ILTUTMISH’S TOMB
Iltutmish was the successor to Qutb-ub-din and iit was during his reign that the Qutb Minar was completed. He built his own tomb in 1235 just outside the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque on the west side. The dome is now gone but the interior is covered by intricate geometric and calligraphic panels.

    QUTB MINAR
Here on the south side of Delhi, the Qutb Minar towers over the area that made up the capital of the Islamic Delhi Sultanate. Qutb-ub-din Aybak built the first mosque here on the remains of older Hindu and Jain temples to go along with his tall Victory column, the Qutb Minar , announcing the arrival of Islam onto the Ganges. The tower is a five-story - 72.5 meter/239 feet - affair that time has given a slight tilt to. Begun in Qutb-ub-din Aybak’s time, it was not completed until his successor’s - Iltutmish - rule.
