The pillar originally stood in Vishnupadagiri, a spot nearby to Bhopal. The original purpose of the pillar was astronomical in nature while an inscription on the pillar states it was a flagstaff raised in honor of the Hindu god Vishnu in memory of the Gupta king Chandragupta II (375-413). The pillar is 98% wrought iron, withstanding corrosion for over 1600 years, a testament to early Indian metallurgical skills. Leave a Comment

If one victory column is great, than two would be so much better or so must have thought Ala-ud-din Khilji who had construction on another tower that would have been twice as high as the Qutb Minar. Building only got as high as the first story, some 24.5 meters high, which was also about the time of Ala-ud-din’s death. Leave a Comment

Mahatma Gandhi is the most famous person of modern-day India. He was at the head of the movement which finally brought independence to India at the end of World War II from Britain. It was here at the Rajghat that Gandhi was cremated following his assassination in January 30, 1948. A black granite pedestal is inscribed with Gandhi’s last words, “He Ram!” (“Oh God!”). Across the street from the memorial is the Gandhi National Museum where you can find out much more about the man, his life and philosophies. Nearby to this memorial was also where another pair of Gandhis were cremated - Indira and Rajiv. Leave a Comment

Here on the south side of Delhi, the Qutb Minar towers over the area that made up the capital of the Islamic Delhi Sultanate. Qutb-ub-din Aybak built the first mosque here on the remains of older Hindu and Jain temples to go along with his tall Victory column, the Qutb Minar , announcing the arrival of Islam onto the Ganges. The tower is a five-story - 72.5 meter/239 feet - affair that time has given a slight tilt to. Begun in Qutb-ub-din Aybak’s time, it was not completed until his successor’s - Iltutmish - rule.
