    Trains to Bandung
  • Tip Rating:
  • From Jakarta Gambir train station, take an ArgoGede train or a Parahyangan train.

    Argogede
    This train only stops at the departure/destination stations, Gambir (Jakarta) and Bandung. All coaches are air-conditioned and classified as Executive Class. You get a small pillow to use during the ride, and a box of snack & drink. You can also order some food like fried rice etc. on board. The price from Jakarta to Bandung is Rp 75,000 (one-way), that is less than US$10 per person, and it takes about 2.5 - 3 hrs.

    Parahyangan
    Stops at many train stations along the way, so it takes more time to get to the destination (about 2-3 hours). Economy and Business class coaches available. You can even get a ticket without seat - that means you stand during the ride. Ticket price is of course cheaper than Argogede.

    No time? Don't like views?...
  • Tip Rating:
  • No time? Don't like views? Ok,... you can get there by air. It's a 40 minutes flight. They don't fly from the main airport (Soekarno-Hatta) but from Husein Sastranegara domestic airport. Services are provided by Sempati, Merpati and Bouraq airlines. They run the service 9 times a day except Sunday, 7 times only. Price ranges from $6-9. Differences are in seat types.

  • Tip Rating:
  • Most likely you will travel from Jakarta. Can travel by air, but go by rail instead you can enjoy the beautiful scenery, the tea plantation, some locals harvesting, etc. The station that I always go to is Stasiun Gambir (Gambir Station) in Jakarta Pusat (Center Jakarta). There are 3 types of seat. Economy (Ekonomi), Business (Bisnis) and Executive (Eksekutif). Notice how some Indonesian words are similar with English?
    I never sit economy class before (I'll never try and wouldn't reccomend you to do so). The only difference between business and executive is air conditioning. And it does matter! There was this one time me and my mom bought Business class, sat there, boiling like crazy, because the fan refused to do its job, and the train attendant walked around offering hot tea. There's not much price different. Hungry? Try the fried rice for $1, not bad, I always have it everytime I travel... the price hasn't change for two years.

  • Tip Rating:
  • Some tips when you go and buy the ticket yourself in the station. If you're lucky you can just go to the station and get a ticket for that day. But, not always. Buy the ticket at least a week in advance. The booking fee for having ticket in advance is only around 20cents. Peace of mind. You'll buy the ticket at the price you should pay. Otherwise, you might need to buy from the 'calo' (=people who buy a large sum of ticket and sell it at exorbitant prices, at least twice) They will approach anyone and offer anyone. If you want to buy from them, check with the selling booth first, whether it's really sold out or not. You can bargain with them.

  • Tip Rating:
  • There's a website with all the time table and price. It's in Indonesian, but you can tell which one's the departure time, price, etc etc. It has the contact and addresses of each stations.

    http://www.pacific.net.id/content/transportasi/ka/

    Here's the translations:
    Ke = To.

    Nama Kereta = Name of Train.

    Berangkat = departs.

    Tiket = (literally means ticket) but here it means price.

    AC = Air conditioning.

    Note = Note (here they mentioned about operating days) It's all the abbreviations of days.
    Sen=Senin= Monday.
    Sel=Selasa= Tuesday.
    Rab=Rabu= Wednesday.
    Kam=Kamis= Thursday.
    Jum=Jum'at= Friday.
    Sab=Sabtu = Saturday.
    Ming=Minggu = Sunday.
    Rute = Route.
    Tiba = arrive.
    Sby=Surabaya.
    Ps Turi= Pasar Turi (station name in Surabaya).
    Gambir= Station name in Jakarta.
    Eks=Eksekutif=Executive class
    Spesial=Special.
    Bisnis=Business Class

    Obviously, to know which class is better, just see the price. More expensive = better class.

  • Tip Rating:
  • Local: Most roads in the centre of town are one way. This makes it quite a struggle getting around town.
    Bus: city buses go north-south or east-west, 250Rp.
    Taxi: 4 companies run metered taxi services. Taxis can also be chartered by the hour.
    Air: Bandung's airport is 4 km from the city.
    Train: The station is in the centre of town behind the bemo station. Regular connections with Jakarta's Kota and Gambir stations

  • Tip Rating:
  • From Jakarta, we (my fiance and I) took the train from Gambir Station. It's a three hour trip and goes through some beautiful countryside.
    Most taxi drivers in Bandung do not use the meter so before entering a taxi you have to negotiate price. It's best to ask your hotel or travel guide for an aproximate cost of taxi ride to your location in the city. Bring small banknotes with you (500, 1000, 5000 and 10.000 rupiah). My fiance and I were only in Bandung for two days so we rented a car with a driver. (our hotel arrainged this) This is much easier way to get around the city and visit the tourist attractions in Bandung.

    You can fly from Jakarta to...
  • Tip Rating:
  • You can fly from Jakarta to Bandung but it is preferable to go to Bandung by train. Upon arriving at the Soekarno-Hatta airport at Jakarta, take the Dambi (or is that Damdri?) bus to Gambir. Cost is Rp 5,000. And take the train to Bandung. The train has only two class, Business (Bisnis) and Executive. Executive class is airconditioned and Bisnis is not. Other than that, no other difference between the two class. Cost for the Bisnis class is Rp20,000 and Executive is higher.
    Again and again, I have to recommend the angkot but then you can also take the bus which is more expensive and the taxi.
