  • Unless you're planning to stay here forever, prepare 12USD to get out of HCMC. Yes, they will also accept the local currency (dong) if you run out of those greenbacks.
It makes sense to count all those dongs before you make your way to the customs, espcially if you're dong-challenged like me. An angry queue of people were behind me as I dug up those dongs. Thank God they were cursing in a foreign tongue.

In case you're wondering, Tan Son Nhat Airport is not too far from HCMC. It cost about USD5 by taxi to get to town . Upon arrival, you'll also be given these things:

1)Arrival/departure card - white/blue duplicate form (complete this on the plane, the immigration officer will take the white copy and return the stamped blue copy to you) - when you check into hotels they will want to see the blue form.

2)Baggage declaration - white/yellow duplicate form (complete this on the plane and hand to the custom's officers who will stamp it and return the yellow copy to you). If you are bringing any CDs or video tapes you must declare them and may have to hand them over for 3 - 4 days "cultural approval"

3)Visa application - you should already have a copy of your visa application form (white A4 size with your photo on the top right hand corner). If for some reason the travel agent has not returned this to you, take another copy from the airline staff and complete it. Hand the form to the immigration officer with the photo attached, who will keep it and stamp your passport. Note that the visa application is only needed if this is your first visit on a new visa. For subsequent arrivals on the same visa, you do not need to complete the application form.

4)Health declaration - yellow form. You may not receive this as it is not given out consistently. Fill it in and have it in your hand as you enter the immigration hall. If someone asks for it, hand it over. However, they rarely ask for it and while you are rummaging around for it, everyone else is rushing ahead for the immigration queues.

    Than So Nhat Airport (New)
  • Tip Rating:
  • This New Terminal of Than So Nhat was opened in August, 21, 2007 with Tiger Airways being the first to be recieved. It was Officially opened on Sept. 2, 2007 during Independence Day. It has a passenger capacity to 8 million passengers a year and the total capacity of this airport will reach 15 million passengers per year. The old terminal will become fully domestic. After 2015, when Long Thanh International Airport is completed, Tan Son Nhat will serve domestic passengers only.

Than So Nhat is Located at: Tan Binh District about 7 km (4 miles) northwest of the city center, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Taxis are plentiful outside the arrivals area, and a ride to town should be around $5. Alternatively, your hotel may have an airport shuttle—more expensive, but also more convenient.

    Than So Nhat Aiport (Old)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Tan Son Nhat International Airport has its origins in the early 1930s, when the French Colonial government constructed a small unpaved airport, known as Tân Sơn Nhất Airfield in the village of Tan Son Nhat. By mid-1956 United States of America foreign aid built a 7,200-foot runway and the facility became South Vietnam's international airport. During the Vietnam War, Tan Son Nhut Air Base it was an important facility for both the United States and the South Vietnamese Air Force (VNAF). Before 1975, Tan Son Nhat International Airport had been one of the busiest airbases worldwide.

It is located around 7km (4 miles) northwest of the city center. It is the largest of the three international airports in Vietnam receiving more international flights than the capital, Hanoi. Twenty-two airlines serve 18 cities in Asia and Europe with regular flights going to Bangkok, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. The terminal has been expanded recently and improvements are continually being made to handle larger numbers of passengers. However, compared to most other South East Asian cities, facilities are very limited. A New Terminal Was Recently Opend (see my Than So Nhat Airport New Tips) A project to build a new international terminal is planned, although it will not be operational for a few years.

Than So Nhat is Located at: Tan Binh District, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; Taxis are plentiful outside the arrivals area, and a ride to town should be around $5. Alternatively, your hotel may have an airport shuttle—more expensive, but also more convenient.

From Singapore to Ho Chi Minh City
  • Tip Rating:
  • A number of airlines fly to HCMC from Singapore.
Vietnam Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Garuda Indonesia and Lion Airlines fly directly from Singapore to HCMC. Fares cost about S$250-S$350 return.

1 budget airline also fly from Singapore to HCMC. Tiger Airways will fly to HCMC for less than S$50 one way.

The journey takes about 3 hours.

    Air
  • Tip Rating:
  • Travel by air can be considered the fastest and of course costing the most as compared to train & buses.

If you can't stand the numb butt for travel by bus for 12 hours or more, travel by air is the best option.

For me, i can't possibly get to Vietnam fast across the ocean. So, air travel will be the only choice at least from Kuala Lumpur to HCMC.

    TRANSPORTATION BY AIR
  • Tip Rating:
  • 1. International fight
Of course you can take your prefered airline. In this tip, I just want to remind you about departure tax you are requested to pay at Tan Son Nhat Airport, that is US$12. You can pay by US dollar or VN dong

    2. Domestic flight
There are only 2 airlines, Vietnam Airlines & Pacific Airlines who have exclusive right to fly domestic sky and that is the reason why their airfares are also up to the sky. At present time, round ticket from HCMC to Hanoi is US$200. Pacific Airlines are lounching a promotion with only US$150, but there are many conditions applied.

Arriving at Tan Son Nhat Airport
  • Tip Rating:
  • I arrived by Vietnam Airlines to the Tan Son Nhat Airport which recently sports a new terminal. The terminal is spanking new, clean and nice. If you need a visa, you would a 'Landing Visa' counter just to the left, before the immigration counters. Expect lots of bureaucracy and waiting time to get your visa. Make sure you have a letter through your travel agency, otherwise you may be denied a visa. Bring along some passport-size photos so that you do not need to pay anything from USD4-10 just to get your picture taken. The whole process of getting your visa may take 1 hour!!! Then proceed for immigration clearance and after that you arrive at your baggage carousel. Some duty free shops are also found here. After that, you would need to pass customs where your luggage will be scanned. Then you come out to Ho Chi Minh City and you would enjoy a wonderful holiday!
