There are more taxicabs in Saigon than one can shake a stick at. Unless it is raining, there are plenty of cabs running around on the streets waiting to be hailed. However, the locals do not hail taxis from the street unless they do not have a cell phone at hand (and how often does that happen in Saigon?) The best way to get a taxi is ordering one from the companies of your choice.
Our top choice is the blue and white Vinasun; our second choice is the yellow Vina Taxi, and our third choice? There is no third choice. Although there are over a dozen taxi companies in the city, my friends and relatives refuse to use anyone but the two afore mentioned companies.
The reasons we prefer Vinasun and Vina Taxi over other companies are:
1- Vina Taxi (Tel: 8 11 11 11) is the very first taxi company in Saigon. It is owned by a Taiwanese company whose reputation of good service is sterling from day one.
2- Vinasun (Tel: 8 27 27 27) has the newest, cleanest, most quiet and comfortable cabs around.
3- Both companies have the most courteous drivers and the newest cars, the A/Cs work well and the dispatch time is quick.
4- Both companies’ cabs are suitable for four, five, and seven passengers, making it very convenient in all situations.
Legitimate and licensed taxicabs are not a rare breed in Saigon, but you need to know how to distinguish them from the "taxi dů" or "taxi ma" if you are going to hail them from the streets. Look for the company's name on the side door, back door, seat covers, and dashboard. Look for the large meter installed at eye level above the dashboard. Look for the uniform-clad drivers.
The meter in a legitimate cab always starts at VND 12,000 (US$0.75) for a four-passenger car and VND 15,000 for the larger vehicle. The increment is VND 3,000 for each km thereafter. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Taxis services have dramatically improved in the last few years with some profeesional companies opening up such as Mei Linh and Vinataxi. But still there are a few rouges out there so here are some tips: You don't need to bargain for a taxi, if the driver tries, get another taxi. The most common trick is for them not to start the meter, if he refuses get out and get another. Taxis are the most comfortable way of getting around, and it's easy and safe to flag a taxi anywhere, anytime; but beware rigged meters that increase the fare too fast. flag down rate is 12,000 VND ( $ 0.73) for first 2 kilometers and additonal 8,000 VND every kilometer thereafter and they don't expect tips plus THEY ISSUE RECIEPTS!
Vinataxis:
For 4-Seater:
a. First 1.7 kilometers or less 12,000 VND
b. Per additional 200 meters up to the 30th kilometers 1,300 VND
c.,Per additional 289 meters up from to 31st kilometers 1,300 VND

Taking a cab from the airport was a breeze. Don't get hook-winked by other taxi drivers who are standing at the glass-door exit of the airport. Go for the trusted taxi operators namely Vina-Sun (White-coloured taxis) and Vina Taxi (Yellow-coloured taxis). I also took the Saigon Taxi (Green & White Coloured taxis) when I was heading back to the airport. A safer bet with these metered taxis.
You have to be aware that there are other white taxis that's not Vina-Sun. Don't try those.
The trip to District 3 in a Vina Taxi cost me about 57,000VND (Starting price at 12,000VND) while a trip back to the airport in a Saigon Taxi cost me 58,000VND (Starting price at 15,000VND).
I believe that a trip to District 1 should not be more than 70,000VND (Slightly less than USD5) Theme: Car/Motor Home

If you take a Taxi in Siagon be aware that the driver may
-say he knows where you want to go, then driver all the way around the city because he pretends not to know where it is! We had a driver take us to the war remenants museam....what taxi driver would not know where the most frequented museum by tourists is??!??!?
-Try and short change you. We gave the driver a 50'000 note for a 30'000 ride. First he pretended like he didn't owe us change then only gave 2'000 change hoping we would think it was a 20'000 note!!
-They also pretend not to understand what you are saying so you try and gesture and they still act dumb, when they're clever enough to rip you off! Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Here is info on Sai Gon taxis
Stick to the big companies. Vinasun is the best, new cars , good service, etc. They start at 15000vnd (about $1usd) you can go hotel/restaurant most areas Dist1 to Dist3 and its many times still only 15000vnd. Next choice would be Deluxe, Saigon tourist or Petro, then Vinataxi, the yellow cars but many are old and beat up.
I wont get in any taxi that I don't recongnize the name of the company (see below)
During rush hour afternoon you might have trouble finding a taxi that doesn't already have customer. You can try to go to a hotel, big market or a traffic circle for better luck.
My experience is that most taxi drivers don't speak or understand english.
The Fake Taxis:
I say stick to the big companies that you see many taxis of because there are some drivers with corporate looking "taxis" with fake meters that run up very fast. I tried one and was mostly amused with it when I discovered what was going on. I took the hydrofoil back from Vung Tau and it should have been approx. 20000vnd to my hotel, but I saw the meter going so fast I complained and the driver gave me some story , so I figured when it hit 300000 I would walk the rest.

To distinguish legal and illegal taxis, the city people’s committee recently issued an official stamp based upon a proposal by the Department of Communications and Public Works.
Taxis without the stamps will be impounded for 15 days for a first violation and 60 days on subsequent occasions on top of standard administrative action.
The transport, investment and planning, and taxation sectors will coordinate to issue and paste the stamps and keep track of the taxis that have received them.
However, it is not clear how effective the measure is.
A Department of Transportation and Urban Public Works official admitted only two-thirds of the city’s 10,000 licensed cabs had received the stamps so far. Theme: Other

Taxis can easily be found in Saigon (HCMC). You can go anywhere in the city with a Taxi. One thing you gotta observe once you get on to a taxi is the meter. Make sure metter is on, and the taxi have an operating 2 way radio, which pretty much means it's legitimate. The fare is fairly cheap, and the driver will be willing to wait around on you if you give him a small tip. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Taxis are reasonably safe in Vietnam. The ones I encountered never really gave me a hassle although I enjoy the Xe Om better by comparison. Flag one down if you see a red circular light illuminated on the windshield indicating they are for hire. If you notice, once the journey has begun that he did not turn his meter on, simply ask him to do so politely. Metered taxi fares start at 5000, 10,000, and 12,000. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Anywhere in the world the taxi drivers will try to "run" around the city to rack up the fare
HCMc is the same anywhere in the world! in HCMc, there are lots to choose from (just like the Bangkok Taxi )
Fact:
It was only later I was told that the reputable taxis are, amongst others, Vinataxi, Saigon and Vinasun.
I cannot figure out why some starts are 15000Vnd and some at 12000Vnd.
My advice :
Stick to these and you should not get "run around". But of course there is always a bad apple among them.
My experience:
I took one which was NOT one of the three taxi companies above and it cost me US2 (approx 32000Vnd) from the Notre Dame Catredral / Post Office to New World Hotel.

Taxis in the city are very easy to come by. I generally travel by Vina-Sun (White-coloured taxis) as Vina-Taxis (Yellow-coloured taxis) were hard to come by. I'm a believer of walking to experience more of the Vietnam life, but I won't go all out to kill myself doing that when I'm lugging some heavy stuff that I've purchased from the market.
The going rate for Vina-Sun is 12,000VND. If you're staying within District 1, or the outskirts of District 3, the metre should remain as it is - 12,000VND.
Most major hotels will have taxis waiting outside their hotels, but for smaller hotels, do get your reception counter staff to make that call for you so that you don't have to foot the bill for the calls made.
