Old wooden villas.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Some owners of these lovely old wooden villas, in the central city, hang on to them and remain living there on prime land with modern city life growing up around them. This one in the photo is right in Parnell, surrounded by bustling activity and not so many residences. Although there are residences not so far away. This old villa is a very classical style wooden house probably quite original. I love them!

    Lamb Shanks
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you are headed to Auckland, I can not recommend any other meal before you have the Lamb Shanks. With all the fanfare of New Zealand Wool, and its farming culture it is almost sacrificial for you not to try the lamb shanks while you are here. On our evening meal with the rest of the mid-winter Auckland VT meeting crew, I tried the lambshanks and was not disappointed. I had it at Waterfront Cafe, where the friends were just as good as the shanks!

    Monteith's Brews
  • Tip Rating:
  • When you are in Auckland, you should do as the Aucklanders do.... when it comes to drinking the local brew, that would be Monteith's. I enjoy taking a sip of the local trade to see which ones are the best, and I am also lucky enough not to drink beer often enough that I really can tell the difference between different brews... and I will tell you this one was tasty!

I especially enjoyed the Black brand from Monteiths, which is a little smoother than a stout, but still has a very rich taste! Definitely check out the other beers, as they often come out with a seasonal range which you will only get while you are there.

    HANGI - TRADITIONAL MAORI COOKING
  • Tip Rating:
  • Hangi is one of the Maori ways of cooking under the ground using hot rocks. Any kind of meet like lamb, chicken, pork or fish is suitable to be cooked this way. The more common vegetables used are potatoes, kumara (sweet potato), pumpkin and corn.

From the preparation to enjoying the food it takes about 7 hours. This is certainly not "fast food".

    Maori Culture
  • Tip Rating:
  • Aotearoa - Land of the Long White Cloud is the Maori name for New Zealand, and its Maori roots are evidenced even in the middle of downtown Auckland. From the Auckland Museum to the Skytower, and throughout the streets evidence of this heritage is apparent.

As we strolled along in the ground floor of the Skytower, we saw this great Maori carving. It features the intricate woodworking, and of course the traditional Paua shell eyes. We would learn more about this culture on our trip to Rotorua.

Have fun learning more in Auckland!

While I live in Auckland for over 3 years, I saw a quite lot of people walking on the street even at downtown with bare feet. As we know there is not much polution in New Zealand, however it is not such a good idea to release your stinking feet for more freedom I think...

    Grey Lynn Festival
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Grey Lynn Festival is held every year in November. A very popular event, there is music, food, shopping and the best ethnic exhibition you will find in Auckland. There is music from local bands and Polynesian choirs and the day runs late. Smaller stages with dance and solo performances are also available. Admission is free but you may wan to buy at some of the shopping stalls.

    The Superette
  • Tip Rating:
  • The superette was also a name given to a type of ‘dairy’ store and maybe sold a little more in the grocery lines. Despite name changes like ‘the Deli’ to some, you will still see plenty of superettes around. Although business may not be as good as it used to be with the longer opening of the bigger supermarkets, these little stores are always convenient for the one small item you may run out of, or just simply to park outside and run into.

    Auckland Rodeo
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Auckland Rodeo is held each year in December at Carlaw Park. There is a mix of rodeo events with the suitable music, entertainers and performers not usually seen in New Zealand. Plenty of Cowboys and Cowgirls.. you’d almost think you were in Texas. The gates open at 4.00pm and things really get a hussle on with the main show beginning at 6.00pm.

    Location : Carlaw Park
