ok, being the immature sod that i am, a fond memory for me would have to be tearing around in a golf cart. lol, shows my level of maturity doesnt it? oh what fun we had in these little buggies.

firstly it was being chased by the german sheperd guard dog as we hooned around an 'out of the way' track, that turned out to lead to one solitary house set in lush bushes. i guess guard dog was doing his job well! boy did we freak, and put the pedal to the metal and got out of there, in all 5km p/hour of speeding glory!

then there were the mangroves. we (ok, more like my idea) was to do burnouts in the mud of the mangrove swamps. this was great fun in theory, and started off well. until we got bogged in the mud, and all had to help lift the cart out of the mud. note to self, do not play in swampy ground!

then we decide to park at the end of the island's runway and see the plane take off. the problem though was that the cart would not start! yep, battery failure at the vital moment! a man came out of the office to help us get out of the way, and when he realised we couldnt, helped us push the cart out of the way of the oncoming plane! (yes, very indiana jones-esque it was!). he ended up fixing the battery connections and we were on our merry way.

ohhh how i wish i could have a cart for my own personal use around perth! :)

    No Cars: Sand Streets
  • Tip Rating:
  • The streets are sand and there were almost no internal combustion automobiles on the island. There were said to be a beer truck, and maybe two other cars. All transportation was by foot, bike or golf cart. I soon found though that if I went barefoot I wore all the skin off my feet.

Walking along the shore (wearing shoes) into town to get a meal or go diving or snorkeling, and then walking back in the evening along the path.

    No Cars: No Cars Allowed!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Definitely, my favourite thing about Caye Caulker was the lack of vehicular traffic on its sandy roads. Most people travel on their own two bare feet, some use bicycles and some use golfcarts.

This really adds to the laid back atomosphere on the island. Nobody is in a hurry, so pedestrians and children and pets and even iguanas can all use the street safely and noone has to breathe those annoying fumes from the car exhausts.
