It is a bit steep, but not very long. A beautiful place for the eternal rest!!! (Pics. 1 and 2) And the view of Cavtat from above is lovely (pic. 5). The Racic family Mausoleum is situated at this cemetary (pics. 3 and 4), created by the fameous croatian sculptor Ivan Mestrovic Cavtat has a long tradition of sailors and shipowners, and The Racic family owned a steamboat company founded in 1910. Rumours has it that Marija, the daughter of the family, had a love affair with Mestrovic (others claim that it was the mother Mare who was his mistress!). The whole family of four died within a short period of time around 1920. Leave a Comment

The cemetery stands on the hill that overhangs the city. On top, stands the monument of the Račiċ family, a wealthy family of Ċavtat's shipowners. It was built by the well-known Croatian sculptor Ivan Mestroviċ in 1921. We have not climbed to the cemetery (next time) but I have read that the work or Mestroviċ is full of symbolism and worth the visit. Leave a Comment

Ċrkva Gospe od Snijega i samostan franjevaca (Church Our Lady of the Snows and Franciscan Monastery) was built in two periods: 1484 by the Franciscan brothers, and 1502 thanks to a grant from Franka Gučetiċa. It is possible to climb on top the clock tower but we have not done it as we were too short of time. Leave a Comment

Right above Cavtat's riviera, the Old Town, is ghostly quiet and welcoming at the same time. For us it was like discovering our own secret place! We love small streets and alleys, and the best part was seeing tiny, tiny churches like this scattered around. Leave a Comment

This was probably the prettiest cemetery I have ever seen....up the hill of the Old Town of Cavtat toward the church. Views of the hills and sea provided the backdrop for the cemetery. The lucky ones were under the palm tress for shade...hehe Leave a Comment Directions: above the Old Town

This tip could be listed under the "Off the Beaten Path" section but for travelers staying more than just a day or two in this area, taking a day cruise to one or all of the ELEFITI ISLANDS perhaps should be one of your "must see" attractions. Kolocep, Lopud and Sipan are the major islands comprising the chain of Elafiti islands between the Pelješac peninsula and the Lapad peninsula. "Their name derives from the ancient Greek word ‘elafos’ meaning deer (deer islands). "These islands were once places favored for the summer residences of the Dubrovnik aristocrats. The three most well-known islands are Kolocep, Lopud, and Sipan (sorry I could not add the proper accent marks). Each has treasures waiting to be explored: beaches, caves, ruins of fortresses, churches, monasteries, summer villas etc. Water sports are popular such as snorkeling and kayaking. Look for old gardens and orange and lemon trees. The views are spectacular. Kolocep is the smallest and closest of the 3 major islands and is the site of Witches Cave & blue Cave; Lopud, the 2nd largest and most visited island and is 50 minutes by boat from Dubrovnik. Look for the beautiful & famous "Sunj" beach, the 1483 Franciscan Monastery; Sipan (pronounced 'shee - pan') is the largest and is only 17km from Dubrovnik. Look for the kiosks near the waterfront which has information, cruise times, and tickets for cruises to the islands. Prices vary for destination and season. Some day cruises offer music, guides, lunch and more for a higher, all inclusive price. Leave a Comment

The promenade is beautifully lined with palm trees and lush vegeation and is an enjoyable walk alongside the shops and cafes - of course you will want to stop off at one of these :-)) Several boat companies can be found here undertaking various taxi services to other bays and towns nearby as well as Dubrovnik, several times a day.

Climb to the top of Cavtat's cemetery (Sv. Roko) to see the mausoleum of the sea-faring Racic family - a work by a noted sculptor Ivan Me?trović. It was built in 1921 wholly in stone and full of symbolism pertaining to human birth, life and death. Not only can the mausoleum with its angel sculptures be viewed but also a wonderful view out across the cemetry to sea and the surrounding coastline.

Ċrkva Sveti Nikole (Saint Nicholas Church) is the Roman Catholic parish church of Ċavtat. It was built in baroque style. The church contains a picture gallery, founded in 1952, with many valuable artistic works including a 15th century icon of Saint Nicholas. Leave a Comment

I have not been able to identify this building that has a great look with its free stone built front. On the right, the ground level is a post office. On the left, there is a post, left to the entrance that says : "sobe, Zimmer, rooms, camere". Then, if you want to know more about this superb house and to have a look inside, why not rent a room ?
