 | Cavtat Things To Do | Tips 21 - 30 of 48 | | Popular Things To Do | Other Things To Do Tips | All Tips (48) Right across the street from the statue of Bogišic is the renaissance Rector's Palace. Since 1958 it has been under the administration of HAZU ( The Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts). Bogišices library of between 15000 and 20000 books, his collection of letters, numismatics and graphics are stored there. So is the collection of the Society of Embroiders. One of two Mithras found in the Konavlje region is here; relief monuments of pre-christian beliefs representing the struggle between good and evil in form of a fight between a god and a bull, together with other stone fragments from the roman period. Rector's Palace is currently (april 2006) closed for maintenance / reconstruction, but I managed to sneak photograph two pieces of archaelogical findings through the gate. I fear some of the items in the collections could be damaged or missing: During the war in the nineties the building was closed. Some items from the collections were stored in private homes, others stored in crates in the building itself. Insufficient airing resulted in moisture damages to floors and walls, and what then about paper and leatherwork? Rector's Court is sometimes referred to as the Duke's Palace, and sometimes as Bogišices House. This adds to the confusion about Bogišic; I have seen him mentioned as Duke Bogišic ;-) But the Ragusa Republic was very roman in it's structure, thus Rektor in that time was an elected administrator, and not a duke. Also, I believe Bogišic never lived in the house: In a report to the Croatian Parliament about it's work, HAZU writes that the reconstruction work will take years, and will be extended to including Bogišices family home (http://www.sabor.hr/Download/2006/05/17/sazetak_izvjesca_o_radu_HAZU_Saboru_RH_za_2005._8.5.06.1.pdf) Leave a Comment Address: Obala 18, 20120 CavtatPhone: +385 20 478 556Directions: Next to St. Nicholas Parish Church

The main activity in town was relaxation. Whether it was stretching out in the sun, swimming in the sea or reading in the shade of the pines everything about this place is relaxing. A few people had pedalos or jet skis but for the most part, people just relaxed and enjoyed themselves.

On the Rat peninsula of Cavtat is the Gothic-Renaissance Franciscan church and monastery - Our Lady of the Snows - named after a Benedictine church that existed on Mrkan (a small island just outside of Cavtat). It was built in two periods: 1484 by Franciscan brothers, and 1502 by a noble Frank Gučetić - its present state. Its tower can be seen reflected in this picture. The main artifact inside the church is a polyptych (beginning of the 16th c.) by Vicko Lovrin (see pic 2) whilst the monastery itself houses an art collection. Above on the hill is the mausoleum where we shall later head for.

St Nicholas is baroque parish church of Cavtat which has a beautiful interior. Adjacent to it you'll find an exhibit of several rare and valuable pieces such as the painting of St. Nicholas (15th ct.), an alabaster relief (14ct.), "St. Sebastian" by the master Genarri and works by Bukovac.

The esplanade leads into a path that goes for several kilometers around the waterfront, up the hill and around the corner. We walked the trail for a half hour and found it most interesting, some old houses , farmland and an interesting waterfront. This little rock pool looks as though it has been here for centuries. Rain clouds were fast approaching and we had to quickly return to the town and the safety of a nice restaurant. Leave a Comment Directions: Continue walking from the esplanade past the Church

There are additional sights in Cavtat worth seeing; unfortunately we didn't have time to see them ourselves but they would certainly have been on my list. The Rector's Palace Not to be confused with the Rector's Palace of Dubrovnik, Cavtat's Rector's Palace nevertheless is notable for its Renaissance architecture and today the Rector's Palace houses the library and archives of a famous Cavtat native son, Baltazar Bogosic. Bogosic was a doctor of philosophy and law and a member of many European academies. Bogosic's Palace is also the sight of the Cavtat Museum, where Bogosic's various personal collections are on view. Other artifacts from the Greek & Roman periods are objects of the museum as well. Racic Mausoleum The mausoleum is the final resting place of the prominent Cavtat shipping family, Racic, and is located in the graveyard of St. Rok. The mausoleum itself was erected in 1921, but the Chapel of St. Rok dates from the 15th century. It was the last wish of Marija Racic. Constructed of white stone from the island of Brac, in the shape of a dome. The structure of the mausoleum is architectural notable itself because "The entire structure was built without a single piece of wood, or any other material except bronze, of which the door and bell were made." Embellishments such as the arch covered with the heads of angels, the floor which tells the "tale of biblical history symbolizing the four evangelists, the main alter and side naves, is full of symbols symbolizing the three basic stages of human fate: birth, life and death," are certainly worth the visit. In addition, the bell cast itself is inscribed with Mestrovic's own words, "Learn the mystery of love, and you will resolve the mystery of death and believe that life is eternal." The House of Vlaho Bukovac The home of famous Croatian artist, Vlaho Bukovac, born in Cavtat was declared a cultural monument in 1969. The house is noted for its architecture and gardens and as the sight of Bukovac's legacy and the heritage of the Bukovac family. The interior has for the most part retained its original characteristics from the early 19th century but the internal wall paintings and the glass doors to the staircase were the worf of the artisit himself. A short walk to the north of the seside town brings you to an area of luxuriant vegetation and excellent views of the beaches and back to the town. If you continue walking you will come to an area of upmarket hotels. We were there late October and the peak tourist season had passed which enabled us to enjoy a peaceful amble through this area. Above the Cavtat's cemetery raises the mausoleum of the Racic family - a work by a noted sculptor Ivan Mestrovic. Built in 1921 wholly in stone and full of symbolism pertaining to human birth, life and death. Many steps lead to the mausoleum. Leave a Comment

If you want to do some tours around Cavtat, but you don't have a car, the Atlas Agency is a good option. Their office is located in the center of the town, just near the bus terminal. I did 2 tours with them : * Cruise of the 3 Islands : to Kolocep / Sipan / Lopud. About 280 kunas. With Musical Animation on board. * Montenegro Blu : Kotor Bay, Sveti Stefan, Budva... About 340 kunas. Lunch Included. The tour were well organized and are available in many languages. For the islands I appreciated that they let us many free time to go to the beach. For Montenegro, we did 4 different stops and sometimes I had wished to spend more time, in Kotor for example. The guide don't really do "guided tours" they just give some general information. But since I'm not very keen on guided tours it was ok for me. Their english was good, however their french was sometimes hard to understand. They have many choices of tours including some sport activities such as canoe rides. Leave a Comment

Part of the charm of this seaside town is the countless small boats which adjoin the esplanade. You will see a variety of fishing boats, their nets, some being repaired using methods handed down over the centuries. The fishing boats were of interest to me as I have an aliminium fishing boat, however these Croatian wooden boats were very low to the water level as the Adriatic waters are generally very calm relative to waters in my country.
