Popular General Tips | Other General Tips Tips | All Tips (21) Sibenik was mentioned for the first time during the reign of King Petar Kresimir IV (1058-1074), who brought the Croatian medieval state to the peak of the political and military power. From the document of King Petar Kresimir IV, which was issued by him in Sibenik on December 25, 1066 to the Zadar Benedictine monastery of St. Mary, we learn that he stayed and ruled in Sibenik at that time, with all his state dignitaries and the whole episcopate of his kingdom. His inheritors, Kings Zvonimir and Stjepan II, temporarily stayed and dealt with state affairs in ?ibenik. King Stjepan II (1089-1090) was the last ruler from the Croatian dynasty of Trpimirovici. After him, political conditions in Croatia became very unstable enabling the military and political intervention of Zvonimir's brother-in-law, the Hungarian King Ladislav so that Croatia finally entered the state union with Hungary in 1102. The Hungarian-Croatian kings became the soverigns of ?ibenik as well.

The fortress of St. Ana was called in older time the fort of St. Mihovil. Its oldest forms, dimensions and aspect are unknown. It had been ruined several times until the beginning of the 15th century, when it was built in today's form by white dressed stone.
In its north-east part, the remnants of material culture from the Iron Age were found. It is quite certain that the Croats had erected their fort at the place where there was the "gradina" of old Illyrians. Leave a Comment

Riva (the coast) goes all around the old core of the town and further in direction of the railway station. It is the main pedestrian area of the city, ecpecially in the hot summer nights. The sea-water and the gentle wind from its direction makes perfect refreshing conditions.
Besides, there are a number of restaurants on it and the huge parking place.

Don't miss to visit the breathtaking National Park Krka, which is located near the town of Sibenik. Here you can enjoy in walking, bathing under the waterfalls, sightseeing ....

Sibenik is a hilly town of great charm... unlike other more touristic Croatian towns the damages of the war can still be seen, sadly. When I went there (2001) it really looked as if the town had been forgotten... walking up and down the narrow lanes I could hear just my footsteps
the wonderful architecture, the stone alleys, the quietness of the place. And also the amazing places to visit in the immediate vicinity: primosten and it's delightful beaches, krka national park and its waterfalls, and skradin, a charming hole in the wall Leave a Comment

I have been unable to identify this church. I do not feel it is Sveti Frane (San Francesco) as, as far as I remember, it is a little up-hill to the old city. If I am not wrong, it stands between Ulica Ante Starcevica and ulica Stjepane Radica and on the different maps I have looked at, it has no name, which should mean it has no interest !.
However, if it is true that the bell tower has nothing special (first photo), it has a side entrance (second photo) with on top (enlarged on the third photo) a bearded man with the right arm raised (blessing the people ?) while in the left hand, it holds two huge keys. Leyle (VT The WanderingCamel), because of the keys, identifies him as Saint Peter. Thank you Leyle for your contribution!
The fourth photo shows in a niche a young man clad in a medieval garment, holding a (broken) spear in his right hand while he bears a stone with a Malta cross in his left hand. On the right, a snake is certainly trying some evil doing ! This is why it is here, isn't it ?
I suppose it is one of the following : St. John's church, St. Krsevan's church, St. Lovre's church and monastery, The New church, St Grgur's church, St Frane's monastery and church, St. Nikola's church, St. Dominic's church, The church of Uspanie Bogomatere, The church of Holy Ghost, St Barbara's church. In the heart of the Adriatic coast, at the mouth of the river Krka, hidden among the channels, there lies the Old Croatian fortress of St. Mihovil. In 11th century houses of a town emerged at the bottom of the fortress. The great Croatian King Petar Krešimir IV made the name of Sibenik famous ever after. That is the beginning of the town history and its beauties.
From the sea the view of the town is magnificent: to get to the harbor, vessels have to pass through the Sv. Ana channel (St. Anne), and by Fort Sv. Nikola (St. Nicholas), the work of the famous Italian Renaissance fortification builder Michele Sammichele. The town developed on hilly terrain, which is thoroughly packed with houses that have been huddled together since the town was first mentioned in 1066. Gradina, the oldest part of Sibenik, still exudes a mediaeval atmosphere. As the town expanded around Gradina, the building styles changed. Stylistic variation can also be seen on the most important building in Sibenik, the cathedral of Sv. Jakov (St. Jacob), which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It was built during the 15th century. The cathedral was the crowning achievement of Juraj Dalmatinac’s architectural work, a masterful synthesis of Gothic and Renaissance elements; Nikola Firentinac completed Juraj’s work on the cathedral. On the outer wall of the apse, the cathedral displays a remarkable frieze sequence of 74 human heads, probably representing the contemporary citizens of Sibenik. Unique construction techniques, involving grooved stone slabs, were used for the vault. The baptistery in the crypt under the south apse is perhaps the most impressive example of Juraj’s interpretation of different stylistic conventions. Leave a Comment

In a side street, the attention of the photographer was caught by the entrance shown on the photo. There was not enough room to shoot the whole doorway and I took the most interesting part, the top. There is a coat of arm with an oblique stripe and two flowers (roses ?), one on each side of the stripe. I will try to identify it. Leave a Comment
