 | Hvar Restaurants | Tips 1 - 10 of 40 | | Milna is a little bit out from Hvar (about 10 km) so you have to go there by car... but there are a beautiful spot to take sun and most of all a great restaurant, open night and day, where you can eat good fish and meat (if you don't like fish) cooked on barbecue... Reservation is needed (I missed the telephone number, but I think I'll have in the future) because lot of croatian people go there every night...

We ate breakfast every morning of our stay at the Amfora Hotel because breakfast was included in the price of the room. On one of the mornings, we sat down and ordered our food. Even though the restaurant was half empty, two tourists came up to our table and ordered us to leave. We asked why and they said "You don't understand the right way to travel. This is OUR table and it will always be our table as long as we are here." Now, if it were up to me, I would have refused to give up my territory, and would have eaten my breakfast with them, whether they liked it or not. My husband, ever the peacemaker, hauled me over to another empty table, and thus, an international incident was avoided.
None at this hotel. Food was bland. Eat at one of the many outdoor cafes instead. Leave a Comment Theme: Eclectic/InternationalPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: about average

This picture shows how we always ate lunch and dinner in Hvar. Always outside. Always by the sea. Always feasting on seafood with a fantastic bottle of local wine. All Hvar cafes and restaurants we tried were excellent.
To this day, we still talk about the fried calamari we had on Hvar as the best calamari we have ever had in our lives. Also outstanding was the whole fish cooked with olive oil, garlic and parsley. Mmmmmmm! Cooking the fish whole is the important part, with the eyeball staring up at you. This is not the American way - for some odd reason we think our fish must always be boned, skinned and with heads cut off. However, fish caught in the Adriatic cannot be eaten the American way or it will not taste as good as it should. When I returned to America, I wanted to make the fish Adriatic style, with bones still in, skin on, head on and eyeball staring up at me. At the US fish market (many fish markets, in fact), I tried to buy fish this way, but the markets thought I was crazy. Who eats fish with the head still on and eyeball staring up at you? I will have to return to Croatia for this -- no luck in the US. Leave a Comment

09/04 - Still the wonderful tranquil place I remember from last year. Tried the octopus salad - light and fresh, with corn, fresh olive oil and lemon. Some mellow jazz in the background - I have to stay here next year for a few days. 09/03 - The view from the patio looking out towards the small island, Scredo - the fresh caught fish - the tranquility - the house wine. If you're looking for a place to get away to on Hvar - try the south side of the island.
09/04 - Tried the octopus salad, gnocci with gorgonzola, fresh grilled fish, zuchinni and potatoes and the house wine - all satisfying and delicious. 09/03 - The gnocci with gorgonzola - the frsh caught fish - the house wine. This place belongs to the family of barba Ive - true legend among epicurean nomads visiting Dalmatia. His son Sime together and his brother are catching fish from their boat Tri sestrice = Thee sisters. Fresh is the key ingredient. Don’t come if you expect tablecloths and fine glasses, variety and finesse. There is no menu; you eat what they caught that day. You drink what the dragged down the steep path that week, or their wine. This is a fishermen home. Scent of wine barrels and grilled fish. Poets and lawyers, preachers and gamblers all drunken with the atmosphere.
Fresh prawns, grilled. Grilled fish with boiled potatoes mixed with olive oil and fresh wild oregano that grows behind the house. The huge patio is under a canopy of grape vines with clusters of grapes within arms reach. The restaurant seems to cater more to large groups and families. Tried a hvar plate (sampling of ham, pag cheese, sardines and seafood salad) and carpet shells ( clams - not as plump as mussels but briny and plentiful. Stopped in a coupe nights to have drinks on the patio also - nice setting. Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: US$21-30 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: Ulica sv. Recommended in Footprint. Had the house white, some dalamtion ham, spaghetti with lobster ( the tomatoes, capers, garlic, white wine - wonderful) and a plate of fresh fried girice (little fish which could be eaten whole). The owner told me the best months in Hvar are May, June, September and October - July and August are too busy. Situated about a block off the main square and near Hektorovica's unfinished house - this is one of the more upscale restaurants. The food quality is excellent. I did the chef's recommendations - hvar sampler plate of fish pate-octopus salad- marinated anchovies, fruta di mare risotto, fish fillet w/roasted vegetables. Ordered a bottle of white - Bodanjusa. For desert - a couple slices of fresh succulent watermelon. Try and get a table outside along the walkway - the lights swaying in the breeze, people passing by - makes for a wonderful setting. Finished with some homemade prosec - which was a deep ruby red. I had my last dinner here - lobster spaghetti (140 kn), other white fish (120 kn), grilled vegetable (25 kn) a 1/2 liter of house white (30 kn) - once again a beautiful peaceful setting - late at night I had the walkway to myself. Famous wine producer Zlatan Plenkovic built this unusual structure. It serves both as marina for small boats and as restaurant with special emphasis on wine tasting. They were brave to build special underwater cellar, but due to technical problems, it is still not serving it's purpose. You can go down and have a look, but the glass window into the sea got greenish from algae. Excellent wines, worth spending a lazy afternoon there, just make sure the driver is a strong character - new law in Croatia allows No Alcohol at all to be found in driver's blood. So don't eat too much ripe fruit either. Leave a Comment Theme: Wine Bar/Wine TastingAddress: Sveta Nedjelja, island Hvar, Croatia

09/05 - The food is still reflects good quality and flavor. New item this year - stuffed peppers. Dinko spoiled me my first year with his marinated anchovies - though sadly he has not repeated the dish exactely but still serve tasty variations. My friend didn't warm up to the place or food - he thought everything was pickled (marinated I said) and the prust hanging from the rafters smelled a bit musty (I didn't smell anything). The wine once again had a certain yeast/bread like quality to it - very unique. 09/04 - Dinko is still serving up great food - the slovenia sausage was spicy and flavorful, a different spin on the marinated anchovies, locally produced goat cheese and honey. But the most remarkable was the house wines, especially the white - his wife's family has a vineyard on St. Klement. Don't forget to sign the world atlas. 09/03 - This restaurant only serves what I would call starters (almost tapas size portions). The care, attention and pride of their products is obvious - almost everything I had was superb. Marinated anchovies, Pag cheese, octopus salad (with chick peas mixed in adding a nice contrast of textures), dalmation ham (smooth and buttery), dalmation bacon ( a bit thicker and chewier), the house wine, figs stuffed with almonds and soaked in spirits, the orange and walnut liquors - excellent. The only thing that failed to win me over was the stuffed bread (almost like a stuffed foccia). Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: US$21-30 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: Vl.
