 | Hvar Just outside Hvar town Reviews | 1 - 8 of 8 | | People from Pharos in Greece established a colony here in 385 BC - deep sheltered cove and fertile land were probably the reason they have chosen this location. I love Stari Grad because it is quieter than Hvar, traditional everyday living is still happening in narrow streets, you can smell delicious homemade meals and hear people talking and laughing. Just enter the maze of streets, don't waste time on the main promenade. Leave a Comment

Children were preparing a play with their teacher in front of St. Stephen's Cathedral. It was during school holidays, so I guess it is one of those organized activities to keep them busy and under supervision while their parents are working. What a wonderful bunch of kids ad puppets and of course there was one funny dog to make the whole scene just absolutely charming. Leave a Comment

Put on those walking shoes and start taking your walk from Hvar to the Vira cove along the old path, past the small church of Kruvenica and the old Austrian watchtower on the Smokovnik hill (where you will find an excellent restaurant). When you reach the Vira coven, which has been the northern harbour of the town of Hvar since ancient times, you can visit an impressive Illyrian burial site - a group of about ten ancient stone mounds. This should provide you with your excersize of the day I would say. Leave a Comment

A stroll from Hvar to Markova Spilja (cave), a famous archeological site on the Pelegrin peninsula, west of the town of Hvar. (I would not advise you take this walk without someone who knows the way, because you may have some difficulty in finding the cave). Ensure that you wear comfortable shoes and is a little fit. If you live in the Mediterranean region, you may be used to see this plant. On Hvar, it's growing a bit overall (for instance on the walls not far from the Benedictin monastery). Caper shrub grows wild , it's roots going deep into the rocky terrain in which it thrives. The caper flower blooms for just one day. The condiment we use for cooking comes from the buds of un-opened flowers. The harvesting of the buds is very labour intensive because, for the most part, they are gathered in the wild. Leave a Comment

Stari Grad (Old Town) truly deserves its name. This small town on Hvar Island has numerous remains of Illyrian, Greek and Roman settlement. It’s located at the end of a bay on the northern side of the island, just 15 km from Town Hvar. For more information see my Stari Grad page. Leave a Comment Directions: There are several buses from Hvar to Stari Grad every day. A ticket is 17 kunas (2007).
