The Fortress (Citadel): The Fortress
  • Tip Rating:
  • You can reach it by foot and it is really a great walk, you will see a beautiful panorama from there... this fortress is called Fortezza Spanjola and there, lot of time ago, lived the "podestà",,,

The actual aspect is about of XVI century.
This pic was taken at 5 o'clock in the morning :)

    The Fortress (Citadel): Spanjola fortress
  • Tip Rating:
  • Spanjola fortress is a great place for viewing the town center and taking pictures. In addition, the cafe bar inside serves excellent prosek (see the tip on cafe bar Spanjola).

The municipal coat of arms features the fortress, underlining its importance to the town's protection. The Spanjola fortress in its current form dates back to the 16th century. However, the first fortifications were built on the hill above Hvar town over 2000 years ago.

    The Fortress (Citadel): Citadel
  • Tip Rating:
  • On a small hill, overlooking Hvar stands a fortress, with it's massive walls and old canons ''still'' in stand-by position, keeps an eye on happening in the town and on the sea.

The first fort here was built more than 2000 years ago by Ilirians. Later inhabitants just rebuilt / remodeled it.

Beautiful village, you can still find here the rests of the venetian medieval domination, especially in the ancient, smart palaces.

Today Hvar is a lively town where lot of people spent their summer holidays.

In Hvar, it is worthwhile to visit the fort at the top of the hill. You will get a spectacular view of the town. You can also see cannons, too (quite old, not working) and an exhibit of other weapons of destruction.

The Fortress (Citadel): Hvar and the Venetian Castle
  • Tip Rating:
  • Any view of Hvar from above is spectacular! This picture was taken from the city cemetary...on top of the hill is the Venetian Castle; an absolute MUST when in Hvar. The hike uphill is tiring but so rewarding. It costs money to get into the castle (I'm not sure of how much but definitely below $10), and you should definitely pay it!

    The Fortress (Citadel): FORTRESS
  • Tip Rating:
  • You can just make out, on the right of this picture the fortress perched up on the hill behind the centre of the town. Our hotel is just visible on the far left.

Hvar has a castle that is perched high up on a hilltop overlooking the old town. To get there, simply take the steep, windy pathway from the old town square north. You will eventually come to a road, cross it and begin on the dirt path. Continue on the path until you finally reach the top of the hill, and it is here that you can enter the castle and take in the nice views. You'll notice how the old town looks like a grand piano up here.

The Fortress (Citadel): The Venentian fortress
The fortress perched on a hill above the old town was built at the beginning of the 16th century (in the time of Venice). In 1579 it was restored after explosion of powder-chamber. Its final appearance came after many reconstructions. During French rule some additional reinforcement building was done. The barracks and observation post were built during Austrian rule. It hosts a prominent collection of amphorae and other objects from the ancient times and the Middle Ages. From the fortress toward the town square lead the city walls, built in the Middle Ages. There is a beautiful panorama view of the town of Hvar and Pakleni Islands from the fortress.

    The Fortress (Citadel): The challenge
You are in town, looking up, imagining the views from the top, feeling hot in the sun, hesitating... let's go. It's hard to climb in the sun, but not far, and the views justify the sacrifice.
