Pakleni Otoci (Pakleni Islands)
  • Tip Rating:
  • In the whole Island, all the tourist agencies , the hotels and some privates too organize excursions to Pakleni Islands, the small archipelago just in front Hvar town.
    They describe these islands as a lost paradise, but they are nothing special. They are just made of rocks and marittime pines, without beaches and the bays are crowded of boats and people.The beaches are better in Hvar islands (especially on the southern coast).However the sea is very clear and clean, but it is unconfortable to lay on the rocks when you come out from the water!!

    If you have no problems with the rocks, you will enjoy the beautiful green water and the possibility to do some plunges!
    Also the sunsets are very evocative and romantic.

    If you want to do a day trip in alternative to Pakleni Otoci, I suggest go in one of the various touristic agencies and book a trip to Zlatni Rat (the famous beach in Brac Island) or to the Blue Cave on the Island of Vis.
    Other possibilities:
    - Day trip to Korcula (wonderful town similar to Dubrovnik);
    . Day trip around Hvar;
    - If you practise nudism take a taxy boat and go to Zecevo.
    However the best beaches in Hvar island are Dubovica (white pebbles); Sveti Nedelja (sand and gravel), Milna and Zarace (rocks, pebbles and gravel).

    Watch out for Pirates!!!
  • Tip Rating:
  • The lowlight of my entire trip to Croatia was the way we were treated AFTER on our day long excursion to Vis. We decided to do the trip to Vis because we had read about the beaches in the town of Vis and how unspoiled and great they were. The excursion we signed up for started at 9am and returned around 4pm. We had a 2 hour boat ride first to the blue grotto and then we were supposed to go to the beach for 3 hours and have lunch on the boat and go back. The trip was fine but we didn't go to the town of Vis... we went to Komiza which was charming to look at but the beaches around Hvar are much better.

    It was a good day we were only upset because we were told we were going one place and we never went there. We approached the guy who sold the tickets to us and he freaked out at us and called us spoiled americans. It had nothing to do with money or wanting a refund, our point was we were spending the entire next day on a boat to dubrovnik (so we thought at the time) and we didn't need to spend the whole day on the boat. The 3 hour beach stay was really on 1.5 hours and the beach was not nice. He cursed at us and called us some trashy names- he was the only really bad person we came across in the whole country.

    The trip was great and we enjoyed the blue grotto, the lunch was fantastic and komiza was fine but make sure you know where they are taking you before you go. Ask questions, not just the night before but the morning of. They will show you the most picturesque photos and say that is where you are going but you may end up on the same island but not that place.

    Excursion to Bol Argh!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Don't take the boat for excursion to Bol from hvar harbour. One day to take 4 hours sun in a crowded beach. Bol is wonderful in photos taken from the sky. When you're sitting in, nothing more then a beach. Really Crowded. In addition you'll make a 3 hours going in and 3 hours back in a boat, taking other tourist in jelsa. They will offer orange juice and vodka early in the morning, plus a little burnt fish for lunch.

    If you cannot really miss the beach of bol, at least go to jelsa by street, and take the boat from there. The time travelling will be very short

    LUKA RENT (a car): a rip off
    I got a very bad service from Luka rent (near the bus station). Prices were ok (400 kuna for the day), but that is very bad value for money.

    1 - I had to wait ages in front of the guy, who never stopped taking phone calls
    2 - the seats of the car were wet when we got it.
    3 - the fuel gauge was on FULL. Except after 30km, the "tank empty" indicator started flashing. Meaning that I had to change my plans and queue 1/2 hour to get some fuel.

    If you don't want to pay for a car, you can rent a scooter. However, distances are long on the island.

    I recommend you stay in Hvar town a few days, before leaving for a better island.

    The most expensive beach in the Adriatic

  • If you have a lot of money for your summer holiday and want to spend a high sum on your vacation, then take a look at what it is like to rest in the most expensive beach in the Adriatic.
    Not far from hotel Amfora you can find the private beach in the same bay, called Bonj and you will really love it! The service is excellent: you can rent sun beds, private cabin, order cocktails, meals. or an outdoor seaside massage.
    Just imagine: after one hour massage, take a swim, and after that sip a cocktail in a comfortable sun bed looking to the crowded beaches located opposite.

    There are several service packets available for guests: the less expensive costs about €50 a day, and includes a sun-bed, a table and an umbrella.
    If you rent an extra sun-bed it will cost you 30 more euro a day, an umbrella is €20, and a baldachin €70.

    On the city beach, only about 300 meters away on the shore, a sun-bed can be rented for €1 and for €4 an umbrella. Other services as baldachin - shady trees, seaside massage by your friend are free of charge.
    However, on that beach someone will placed their towels next to yours, which you will have to bring on your own, not to mention you will have nowhere to buy a cold juice. The only thing both beaches have in common is the wonderful Adriatic sea
