What is different ? The arena had not changed much in 20 centuries, it has not changed neither in 30 years. What has changed is the amount of tourists. In 2004, in Summer, busses come, unload flocks of tourists, leave and come back later to upload them. Advice : either come early in the morning or avoid 20th July till 20th August ! Leave a Comment

There were two theatres in Pula in Roman times, one on the top of the Montezaro Hill (only a fragments of it left now) and the second one on the Ka?tel Hill, which can be seen on this picture. It is situated right behind the Archaeological Museum of Istria. Ka?tel Hill dominates the huge port of Pula and here you can see the remains of the fortress from where the Romans have controlled this strategicaly important point. Leave a Comment

The Franciscan monastery was built at the same time as the church, but it was altered in the 15th century. The columns of the cloister are of early renaissance characteristics. A collection of medieval stones, property of the Archaeological Museum of Istria, is on exhibition in the cloister. Leave a Comment

The arena was built at the beginning of the 1st century AD and the Flavius emperors added some parts in 69-96 AD. It is the 6th by it's size but on of the best preserved. Its size is 132m x 105m. The outer wall has three levels of vaulted windows. The forth level has square windows. This is how it looked in 1975. Leave a Comment

Especially in Summer, the arenas allow to display various shows that take advantage of the fabulous surroundings made by the stepped rows of seats and the outer walls ! In arenas, the sound is very good though it is better in Roman theaters where the sounds "reflects" on the front wall. Leave a Comment

Ulica Sergijevaca is running from west to east, with a gentle bend. Then, the sun never hits directly any part of the street very long. In early morning and in late afternoon, the sun will directly hit only parts of it. Around noon, there will always be one side of the street that has a strip of shade. This is one reason why this street is so popular for wandering. Leave a Comment

Of the early Christian sacral objects, which abounded in Pula, the architecture of the cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary has been preserved to a considerable extent. The present building is from the 5th century. It is large basilica with a nave and two aisles. The church was originally decorated with mosaics on the floor, fragments of which have been preserved still today. The cathedral undergone many reconstructions in the past, so different styles can be noticed on it; the arches separating the aisles are of Gothic style, while the columns and capitals still preserve some of the Romanesque mass. The high walls of the nave have kept the early Christian windows, but pointed Gothic windows were opened in the side walls. The side portal of the cathedral from 1457 is decorated with Renaissance reliefs. The cathedral was given a new facade in 1712, at the time of bishop Bottari. It was built in the spirit of classicism. Leave a Comment

The Franciscan church, built of very finely dressed square stone, was completed in the 13th century. The front of the church is distinguished with a gothic rose and a monumental portal richly decorated with twisted columns and relief tendrils that climb from sytled amphorae at the foot. The high altar has a wooden polyptych of high quality with two rows of polycrome and gilded reliefs of saints and richly carved gilt gothic frame with high and slender phials. The figure of Madonna with Sleeping Child takes the central part of the polyptych. The three wings of the monastery and the church enclose a square cloister, which was built at the same time as the church, but it was altered in the 15th century. Leave a Comment

Left to the town hall is the Temple of August (Augustov hram). It was build at the beginning of the first century AD under the reign of August. It was built at the same time than the "Maison Carrée" (square house) in Nîmes and the look is not very different. Six Corinthian columns hold a triangular front and give access to the "cella".
