The Amfitheatre is not only the largest Roman ruin in Pula, but it is also likely the first one you will see if you come into the city by train or by bus. It is the sixth largest amfitheatre in the world and was constructed in the first century BC. The amfitheatre itself is spectacular, although going inside is probably only for those who are history or architecture buffs. The inside, which is still intact, was quarried to provide the limestone used in locals' housing. In the 16th century the Venetians wanted to move what remained of the structure to Venice, but, luckily, they were dissuaded by the local politicans. The real mystery is why such a large structure was built in such a small Roman town (22 000 seats for a town of 5000). It does, nonetheless, present the perfect backdrop for plenty of pictures. The Cathedral of St. mary has a Renaissance façade, but this only masks the true age of the church. Behind the façade is a Romanesque interior that is itself a renovation of a sixth-century basilica. Not to be outdone, the basilica was originally built on the site of a Roman temple, in the time when the Christian church felt the need to erase pagan beliefs by converting temples of the old religion into those of the new. Perhaps the only thing of interest here is the altar made out of a third-century Roman sarcofogus, once alleged to contain the bones of Hungarian King Solomon. The centre of Pula can feel a bit touristy, especially during the summer, and it can be difficult to get that atmospheric sensation that Croatia is so great at creating. Rather than wading through the crowds, you might consider taking a bit of walk along the streets near the train station. There are quite a few Hapsburg era buildings there in an area that is very quiet and perfect for taking pictures. This was the first place in Pula where I actually felt like I was in a touristy place. Perhaps that was because this is such a wide open space that connects the old city and the Roman ruins with the much more modern are of the Giardini and the market. The Arch of the Sergians is also known as Zlatna vrata or Golden Gate and was built in 30 BCE by Salvia Postuma Sergia. The side of the Gate facing the older parts of town contains the more interesting engravings with stories of the victories of the Sergia family. Pula arena is from the 3rd century. I have read somewhere it's the last arena outside of Italy that is so well preserve and still stand fully. The place has a certain ambiance. It's hard to explain. The birds seem to know, since they hang around. The arena hosted some fights. Lots of ruins to walk around and try to make sense. Also undergrounds are some remains of pottery and other artifacs out of this world. Leave a Comment Directions: The most proeminent structure in town, you won't need directions.

The Roman Amphitheatre in Pula is a 2,000-year old colosseum that still hosts concerts and performances. Unlike it's giant cousin in Rome, this is a complete, full circle colosseum complete with a museum underneath. Leave a Comment Address: central Pula, by the train stationDirections: From the train station, a 5 minute walk towards the center leads you to the Amphitheatre.
