Some of these small alleys that climb towards Ulica Castropola and the castle are sometimes so steep that they are mainly stairs. Unless you want to have physical exercise, you have better to take a longer route that will not be so steep, especially if it is a hot day of summer !

Of the early Christian sacral objects, which abounded in Pula, the architecture of the cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary has been preserved to a considerable extent. The whole group of early Christian buildings was erected immediately within the city walls in the course of 4th and i 5th century. It grew at the site of an earlier classical building, perhaps public bath. It is probable that a secret Christian cultic space had existed there at the time when Christianity was a forbidden religion in the Rokan Empire.
The present building is from 5th century and It is a large basilica with a nave and two aisles, 50 meters long and 21 meters wide.
When visiting it, do not miss to see the remains of the original floor mosaics from 5th century.

Monastery and the Church of St. Francis
  • Tip Rating:
  • The monastery and church of St. Francis are located on the slope of the hill between the Forum and Kaštel. The Franciscan came to Pula as early as 13th century, and their large monastery church was completed in 1314. It is a monumental single-nave preaching church built of very finely dressed square stone. In the rear it has three square apse with Gothic triumphal arches. The front of the church is distingiushed with a Gothic rose and a monumantal portal richly decorated with twisted columns and relief tendrils that climb from styled amphorae at the foot.

    Kastel
  • Tip Rating:
  • The most important and the oldest fortification architecture is the large bastion fort on the hill Kastel. The bastion was built on a height above the city, strategically the most prominent place, where the principal city defence fort had stood and was modified during the millennia. It is actually Venetian fortress Citadel which dominates the high ground in the center of the city.
The Historical Museum of Istria is today located in the fort.
The local population called it Kastel.

    St. Nishola's Church
  • Tip Rating:
  • The present Orthodox Church of St. Nicolas, formerly the church of the Native of the Virgin Mary, originated in 6th century on the remains of a Roman building (oribably a temple).
During Venetian rule the church was in 1538 given over to the Greek orthodox population that had moved to Pula from Cyprus and Nauplion.

    Arch of the Sergeius Family
  • Tip Rating:
  • Of twelve Roman city gates three have been preserved. The most attractive must have been the so-called "porta aurea" - Golden gate - which had an exceptionally beautiful triumphant arch attached to its inner side. It is a masterpiece of Roman architecture at the turn of the Christian era. The building of exceptionally harmonious proportions and brillant execution was erected by a patrician woman of Pula Salvia Postuma of the Sergeius family with her own money, as was stressed by the inscription, in honour of three members of her family and who held high military or administrative duties in the Roman state.

    Dvojna vrata - Porta Gemina
  • Tip Rating:
  • Porta Gemina (Double gate) - was built at the turn of 2nd to 3rd century in place of an older gate. Most probably, the gate had a decorative character as it stood at the entrance to the theatre. The gate has two indentical arched openings that opened to a sort of inner courtyard. It is decorated with three semi-columns with composite capitals, and the arches itself are of simple profile. The whole composition is near the top linked by a horizontal garland with relief decoration.

    Temple of Augustus
  • Tip Rating:
  • Temple of Augustus - is a very pretty and well-proportioned building. Although it is not a large dimensions, it creates an exceptionally monumental effect. It is an extremely valuable specimen of temple architecture from the earliest peroid of the empire. It was certainly built in the time of Augustus, 2 B.C. - 14 A.D., and it was dedicated to the imperial deity of Augustus himself and to godess Roma, the personification of Rome.

    Mornaricka crkva
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Portal of the church of Our Lady of the Sea and the walls are built of alternating white Istrian stone and red marble, thus creating a vivid decorative composition with horizontal bands. The church is richly decorated , ecpecially in front. The main portal is of neo-Romanesque characteristics, with jutting gable supported by columns tied symbolically in a mariners' knot, the so-called Samson's knot and resting on semi-recumbent lions. A mosaic of Madonna with Angels decorates the lunette of the portal.
The profusion of outside decoration is matched by the rich interior, dominated by the mosaic below the triumphal arch of the apse, with the figure of Our Lady of the Sea in the centre, surrounded with St. Nicholas, St. Paul, St. Peter and St. Barbara.

    Porta Herculanea
  • Tip Rating:
  • The so-called Porta Herculanea (Gate of Hercules) - Hercules was in Roman times a kind of protector of Pula - protected with two younger, round towers, creates an extremely modest impression. The arched opening was built of simply carved stone bloks, and at the crown it has a ruoghly carved bearde head of Hercules with curly hair. His club is carved in low relief to the right of the head. Close to the club is a damaged inscription, but a very important one, mentioning the names of two Roman officials, the duoviri Lucius Calpurnius Piso and Lucius Cassius Longinus. They were sent by Roman state with the intention of establishing a colony in the gulf of Pula. In an inscription Pula is referred to as Colonia Iulia Pola Pollentia Herculanea.
