The central figure, to which the arch was dedicated, was Lucius Sergius Lepidus, son to Lucius, a military tribune of the 29th legion, which took part at the battle of Actium on the side of Octavian August, when Caesar's murderers were defeated. It is not completely clear whether Salvia Postuma was Lepidus's mother or wife. As the city walls and the gates were demolished during the new regulation of the city, the arch became a self-standing building. Very interesting and picturesque is the navy Church of Our Lady of the Sea (1891-1898) located on the hill of St. Polycarp. It was started by the architect Von Schmidtand continued by Victor Lunz. But it was Natale Tommasi, a builder from Trident, who did the greatest part of the work, particularly as regards the appearance and decoration. The church is three-nave basilica, it has plan of a Latin cross with a semi-circular apse, and it was built in mixed neo-Romanesque and neo-Byzantine styles. Side streets are always quieter than main streets such as ulica Sergijevaca but nevertheless can host interesting houses such as these, with their vaulted entrances. They are not in the best possible condition but once they will be renovated, they will look fine. Leave a Comment

Sometimes, under a vaulted porch, an delicately cast iron gate altogether forbids the access to a private yard but allows the eye to wander into a peaceful space where, right in the very center of the old town, a few meters away from ulica Sergijevaca, flowers bloom. Leave a Comment

In Roman times Porta Gemini was the approach to the city theatre. Its semi-circular stone seats were arranged along the east slope of the city hill Kaštel. The remains of the stage house have been preserved at the level of foundation walls and parts of the semi-circular auditorium, which were preserved, reconstructed in part, and presented archaeologically. The theatre had three monumental entrances. There were two theatres in Pula in classical antiquity. The other, much larger, was located outside the city walls, just like the amphitheatre and made use of the slope of the nearby hill Zaro. The temple base is rectangular and it forms a raised pedestal. The rear part of the temple is a closed cella, while the fore part is the open ptonaos, which is formed by four columns in front and by one column on each side. The columns are smooth with richly ornamented classic Corinthian capitals, while the corner pilasters of the cella are fluted. The architrave under the roof has all around a frieze of the finest execution in relief, decorated with motifs of acanthus, vines, fruit and birds. The frieze is broken in centre in front and the space bears the dedicatory inscription executed in bronze letters that read: "Romae et Augusto Caesari divi f(ilio) patri patriae" - The Rome and caesar August, divine son, father of the fatherland. Dvojna vrata (Double Gate) or Porta Gemina was built at the turn of the 2nd to 3rd century in the place of an older gate. Most probably, the gate had a decorative character as it stood at the entrance to the theatre. Right behind the Double Gate there is the Archaeological Museum of Istria and above it, on the top of the hill, the fortress of Kastel. Leave a Comment

The city palace (Town-hall) was built in the Middle Ages on the north side of the Forum, in the space where the central temple and the temple of Diana once stood. First it was the symbol of communal autonomy, while later it was the seat of the Venetian proveditor. Leave a Comment Address: The Roman Forum

This are remains of the basilica of St. Mary Formoza from 6th century, in fact this is the only preserved part of it, the southern chapel. It was the largest and most important building erected in Pula during Byzantine rule. It seems that the church was built on the ruins of the temple of Minerva. After Venetians afflicted heavy damages in the 13th century, the beautiful decorated marble columns of the interior arches were taken to Venice. The preserved chapel is a very well proportioned building. Leave a Comment
