A very beautiful sight to see. In my opinion, its in way better shapr than the one in Rome for sure. Seems that no one really knows about the one in Croatia but everyone knows the Rome one. For a few Kunas u can get the chance to go inside the area and walk around and what not. Leave a Comment

The third largest Amphitheatre in the world, Pula's Arena is a definite must see for anyone who decides to visit Pula, or Istra in general. I sometimes try to imagine Pula without her Arena and well, it's better not to think about such things, might give me nightmares ;) Leave a Comment Address: Don't worry, you'll see it!

They do not seem to represent any religious figures. If you enlarge the picture, you will see that it looks as if they were three women (three sisters owning the house ?). One, on the right is handling a drum. The one in the center holds an object that I would call a truncheon if she was a knight ! I found out that it might be a sistrum, a percussion instrument borrowed to ancient Egypt but widely used in Europe in the Middle Ages. On the left, the third does not hold anything but is the only one that wears a cape. It is unlikely that it might be a musical group performing in this house ? I would like to know more on this amazing carving ! Leave a Comment

On your trip to Pula you certainly won't want to miss strolling around the city centre, or all the cultural points of interest such as the Arena, the 3rd largest one of its kind (the picture of the amphitheatre at the front page) or the "Golden Door", which is reminiscent of the Arc de Triomphe, at least in my eyes :) Leave a Comment

Until going there I only knew one cathedral with the tower separated from the main building - in %L[http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/9eab8/45ddf/ ]Leiria. Now, I know a second one. And that was my most remarkable note about this monument, as usually built-destroyed-rebuilt, sharing stones with other, including the amphitheater. Leave a Comment

The arena was started around 30 BC during the reign of Emporer Augustus. It was completed in the 1st century and is the 6th largest Roman amphitheatre in the world. It is built from Istrian limestone and measures 130m across and 100m wide. It int's time it would have held 20,000 spectators for gladitorial contests. Today it still hosts major concerts. A complete, intact amphitheatre (cost 20kn per person). It even has the rooms below that the gladiators & lions used to be kept in before being sent into the arena - ther's a museum in there with lots of pottery found (again mainly intact). Worth a visit.

The largest and the most important building erected in Pula during Byzantine rule was the basilica of St. Maria Formosa. The complex of the church built in 6th century did not withstand the ravages of time. The Venetians afflicted heavy damages as early as 13th century, and written reports from 16th century inform that the church was in dilapidated conditions. Only the south funerary chapel that was annexed to the church has managed to survive completely. Leave a Comment Address: Flaciusova ulica

Eastern entrance to a Roman theatre and remains of the proscenium. This part of the city was our favourite playground when we were the kids. It is situated on the top of the hill that dominate the city centre. From here you can have almost the perfect sightseeing of the town and its surroundings. Btw, it is located 100 meters from the main city square. Leave a Comment Address: Kaštel hill

Imagine a medieval barricade, built in a hurry, while the enemy approaches: Everything possible is used, and so, stones, pillars and maybe statues were piled in despair. Time passed and the now useless walls were destroyed, but a small part stands, by the kept twin doors. Browse the walls - Impressive! Leave a Comment
