Walking in the short and narrow streets of the old town is an opportunity to see the succession of styles and exterior influences in Istria. Leave a Comment

The kids LOVED it. It's not spectacular but it's got it's own character and very lovely staff who are enthusiastic. There's a "turtle hospital". Sick turtles are cared for and once they are well and ready they are released back into the sea. Some of them may have to put up with a glorified paddling pool but the intentions are there and it's a very serious business. Unfortunately the animal welfare doesn't spread across - despite our strong protests and arguements one eager member of staff gave our 6 year old a baby crab, as a present. Our intention was to release him into the sea but unfortunately we ended up holding a funeral for "Tommy The Crab"... so parent beware!

Opposite the amphitheatre there is a harbour - with a multitude of trips. Be sure to have a wander to check out all the prices before you commit because the tours differ in as much as whether lunch is included, additional stops etc... There is a tour agency (same side of the road as the amphitheatre) which highly (obviously) recommended tours should be booked through them because they are registered etc... The agency has strange opening hours and when they are open they look closed!

Top example of the historical "salad" that %L[http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/9eab8/18b/ ]Croatia became, here we have a historical building using old remains of other historical buildings. It's a hard and respectful effort to preserve, but it is also a visual mess. Till now, the final and prevailing style is Venetian. But... till when? Impressive, again! Leave a Comment

At the end of Ulica Sergijevaca, close to the forum, a travel agency has settled in an ancient building with this elegant doorway. I have not found any information on what had been this building but it was certainly not a private house. Leave a Comment

From Ulica Sergijevaca towards Ulica Castropola and the castle are very steep, which in the full heat of summer is not very appealing. It would be wiser climb the long way, as explained in another tip and walk down one of this charming alleys ! Leave a Comment

From the Town Hall, you can see on the right of the picture the beginning of Sergius street (Sergijevaca ulica), from where we first arrived. On the left, you can find the Tourist information center that will be glad to give you any information you want. Leave a Comment

High on the right of the front of the Town hall (Gradska palaca), if you look carefully, you will find this bas-relief representing a knight galloping on horseback, holding his spear and his shield adorned with a salamander, ready for the fight. Leave a Comment

Of course, the back of the Temple of August (Augustov Hram) is not as decorated as the front. However, it has too a triangular pediment and fluted columns, but the pediment is sitting on a plain but though impressive stone wall. Leave a Comment
