Elefteria or Freedom Square is the start of the old town. There very nice trees shadowing it and your usual pigeons :o) Many locals are just seating around watching people and it is a very common meeting place. As you can see on the tempertaure board it is 19 degrees and that was on the 5th November, not bad :o) At the moment and until the 11th November there is a very nice exhibition on aerial vies of the world, very beautifl photos. This is also the area where many protests take place as well as concerts or celebrations. Leave a Comment

An insight into ancient Cyprus. Perfect place to visit on a hot day as it is cool inside. The most interesting statue on display is Aphrodite (you will recognise this from all the publicity material on the island and which also appears on the currency. Another interesting exhibit are the terracota figures that were found close to Morphou. They date back to the 6th and 7th Centuries BC. There are also three lions made of limestone and two sphinx which date back to aound 470 BC. They are one of the more recent discoveries. Entrance costs about £1.50 CYP Leave a Comment Address: Museum StreetPhone: (22) 865864Directions: Head to the Paphos Gate and at the roundabout take the second road, Museum Street. Originally this spot was home to an Orthodox convenent. A church was first built back in the 1300s. The present church, however, dates back to 1872. Inside there are some beautiful icons. There is also a huge marble mausoleum which has the remains of the bishops and priests who were killed in 1821 by the Turks during thte Greek War Of Independence. These are very different to the streets in which you will find the huge departmental stores such as Woolworths, Next and Marks & Spencers. Theya re located in the older part of the city within the city walls and are narrow winding streets. This is the best place to buy items such as filigree jewellery, natural sponges and souvenirs of the island. There is also a wide range of eating places in the area in which you can sample the local food. Leave a Comment Address: In the old cityDirections: From Ledra Street, close to Plateia Eleftheris turn right up Filokyprou.

You can actually cross to the Turkish side of the city although most Cypriots will not encourage you to (and I have to admit that I have not stepped over the border since you have to sign a declaration that you recognise the Turkish occupation) Able to sample 'the other side of Nicosia' Leave a Comment Address: Near the Ledra Palace HotelOther Contact: Make sure you do not get a stamp

The museum records the history of Nicosia (Lefkosia) through the ages. It is housed in a lovely old "arhontiko" within the walled city. Of note is the part glass floor which affords a look at the lower level of the house and the ancient remains on which the museum stands. Entrance is free and you need 45 minutes to an hour to walk through it. Leave a Comment Address: In Laiki Geitonia.Directions: In old Nicosia, just off the twin shopping streets of Ledras and Onasagorou.

While walking around the old town make sure to pay some attention to the doors of houses. They are beautifuly designed and most of them have the date of construction. The one on the photo dates back to 1908. Leave a Comment Address: Around the old town
