 | Nicosia Transportation | Tips 1 - 10 of 15 | | Popular Transportation | Other Transportation Tips | All Tips (15) Most people fly to Cyprus. The only other way is to go by boat, and as most people don't have time for this, flying is pretty much essential. If you wish to fly to Cyprus without going via an intermediary country (Turkey), then you have to fly to the Republic of Cyprus (South) as the North is not recognised by any other country that Turkey. This means that you will be flying in to either Larnaca airport (in the South East), or Paphos airport (in the South West). Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane

Cars are completely banned in the whole of Nicosia, so if you want to get around, you have to get yourself a donkey... Actually no, this is not true at all. I have no idea what was going on here, it is pretty unusual to see someone with a donkey in the middle of Nicosia which is why I took the picture! BTW, If you look carefully, you can see the old Venetian Walls of Nicosia behind the donkey. Car is a great way to get around in Nicosia, the drivers there are very well mannered and if you are British, they even considerately drive on the left too (a hangup from the days when Britain controlled Cyprus). I would go so far as to say that Nicosia is by far the easiest Capital city I have ever driven in, although parking can be a little difficult sometimes if you don't know where you are going. Nicosia's main attractions are mostly within walking distance to each other. Mass public transport is confined to a few busses running around the city but which are not convenient to tourists. Fare is less than a Euro. Taxis are decent, most of them late Mercedes, with fare according to the meter (which you must insist they use!). From end to end of Nicosia fare should not be more than 10 Euro. Below is the number for a decent taxi company. Leave a Comment Theme: BusPhone: 22666000Other Contact: Taxi Finlandia

There are almost no public transports in Nicosia. I have seen a few bus stops but it took me three weeks after moving here to spot one! A friend came for a visit and acutally used it to get to the centre of town. Taxis are very inexpensive. The best way to get around is by car so I strongly suggest you hire one if you want to make the most of it. If you are based in Nicosia then you can catch a service taxi which are shared to other towns. You have to call them in advance to book and they will pick you from wherever you are. When you arrive to Ercan airport, take a cab or dolmush. If you arrive in Famagusta or Girne, then again a dolmush would be your best bet. The public transportation was used to be non-existent, well, figuratively speaking. Apparently the situation with this is much better. There are regular buses with certain routes, which you can check at Tourist Info center or the airport or borders. There are also intercity buses that operate regularly (30min-1hr intervals), during the weekend as well. There are many places to rent a car. Also there are cabs you can call. It's easy to get to Nicosia. You can arrange to go by bus from the resort towns, but if you're with a group it's much faster (and just a cheap) to go by taxi. Nicosia is connected to all the major towns by highway and it's a small country, so distances are short. Walking is all you need to do, as the sights are all very close to each other. There are good motorways to Nicosia from Larnaca, Limassol and ever improving roads from the Protaras / Ayia Napa area. There is a very limited bus service available from the later resorts which give you only a few hours in the city (otherwise there is the option of an overnight stay). The service from Larnaca is slightly better. Try to avoid driving around the very centre of the city. The Cypriots are not the most patient of drivers - especially if they see the red Z plates of a hire car. Use your feet instead - but remember when you come to cross the road, that the Cypriots drive on the left as in the UK. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

If you are coming from the airport or another town the best way is by shared taxis or express taxis as they are known here. Ask around for the departing location. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Flights are available to North Cyprus Ercan airport from Turkish Airlines and Cyprus Turkish Airlines. Flights with Cyprus Turkish Airlines are direct (no change of aircraft), however involve a stopover in Turkey. Flights with Turkish Airlines are via Istanbul, and involve a change of aircraft. The fastest and easiest way to get to Nicosia is from Larnaca. If you're staying in Larnaca you can hop on an INTERCITY BUS that leaves from the seaside promenade. A return-ticket costs CYP 2.70 and the trip takes about one hour. The buses are clean and air-conditioned. You can see my bus ticket on the photo. Definitely on foot. Theme: Bus
