copper & tin smyths: nick knacks & bric-a-brac
  • Tip Rating:
  • According to the Metrolpolitan Museum, Cypriots have been working with copper since the 4th Millenium B.C. That is a long time to develop and perfect a craft. The word copper comes from the Greek word Kupros which is the name the Greeks first gave the island of Cyprus.

Now, I am not sure how big a collector of souvenirs you may be, but I do know that lugging pots & pans made of metal is bulky, heavy and sometime impractical. However, you may still want something typical of the island which is also easy to carry.

My suggestion is to buy one the the Turkish coffee pots, also called Cypriot coffee pots by the Greeks, which are so common and still in daily use in this area of the world. Generally, they are smaller bowls made of heavy copper, they have long handles, either made of metal or wood, and are used to heat strong coffee over an open flame or on a stove. We use a propane gas element, but I have also seen them heated over hot sand with gas elements under them in more authentic places. The strong coffee powder is ground much finer than that used in electric filter coffee makers.

You can either buy an antique or one which is new. The price is usually very reasonable. I think I paid about $10 for mine and another $5 for the matching pot for warming the milk. The coffee is served, unfiltered either with or without sugar, in small cups usually with a cookie or biscuit and a glass of drinking water. You let the grounds settle to the bottom before drinking and unlike Nescafé it is not good to the last drop, so leave the grounds undisturbed at the base of the coffee cup.

Otherwise there are copper and tin pots & pans to purchase, some of which that would make excellent flower pots.

the municipal market: fresh fruits & vegetables with a dash of spice
  • Tip Rating:
  • This indoor market ws built in 1932 and retains a certain character. First of all it is busy and there are many people around. Secondly are the many wonderful sights and smells for the market. Fresh fruit and vegetables plus many household items. The prices are very low, as this is where the locals still shop. It has not yet turned into a touristy farmer's market with high mark-ups, handmade arts & crafts and no locals. Sound familar? Well, here you will still find the real thing.
