We had eaten so much since we had been in Prague so we just needed a lightish lunch to tide us over and came across this small café.
They sell a range of very delicious baguettes, which we had and washed them down with a beer. When we were leaving we noticed that they sold tasty looking ice cream…so we ordered a couple of scoops to take away and enjoyed it as we walked through the park on the way to Petrin Hill. People in the know will probably cringe when they read we had dinner at U Rotta. I think it is a bit of a tourist trap…apparently there is a 'folklore show' every evening…except the evening we were there. We decided on U Rotta as we just wanted to eat something….in a basement….and there were dumplings. Located on the triangular Male Namesti, the entrance to the restaurant is strangely via a Crystal Shop. Walk through the shop and then down the stairs into the Gothic cellars below.
Don't bother eating one of the (very stale) pretzels that are hanging on a stand on the large wooden tables. Do however, order a beer. The food was expensive, but at least it was tasty. I had roast chicken served with red cabbage and dumplings and washed it down with more beer. Located in the beautiful Ungelt (aka Tyn Courtyard), just off the Old Town Square, Ebel Coffee Shop is a fabulous place for breakfast or a snack. We had two breakfasts here and would highly recommend it. Nothing too fancy, this small café is clean and comfortable and has service with a smile.
They are know for their coffee, which is very drinkable, and is served in huge mugs (a little too milky for my liking…but surprisingly good anyway). We had their delicious bagels with cream cheese and assorted jams and coffee. They also do some breakfast specials which include coffee, bagel or croissant and juice or yogurt which are good value. If it is a nice day you can sit in the sunny courtyard and enjoy your coffee whilst planning your days activities. There is nice cafe / gallery near Emauzy. It is good place for a coffee-break on the way down from Vysehrad, and opportunity to see an exhibition of, in the most of the cases, some of young Czech artists. Leave a Comment Theme: CoffeehouseComparison: least expensiveAddress: Vysehradska 53

I kept reading great things about Klub Architektu in various Prague travel guides so we were keen to check it out. Although I had also read that bookings were essential we decided to try our luck for dinner one night when we were in the area. We were unsuccessful…they were fully booked. So we decided to return for a late lunch on our last day…no booking, but they managed to squeeze us in. Klub Architektu is located on Namesti Betlemske. Right near Bethlehem Chapel there is a small courtyard where you will find stairs that lead down to this subterranean restaurant. Located in a series of vaulted cellars, it is dark and moody and the perfect place to sample some traditional Czech cuisine.
We ordered a beer to start and decided what stodgy delights to enjoy for our last meal in Prague. Alex opted for one of the house specialities, the Pork & Vegetable stew and I had some lamb with, most importantly, lots of dumplings! This is not the cheapest place to eat, but the food was tasty and the atmosphere was fabulous. We arrived in Prague late one evening and were starving…the food on the plane had been particularly bad. We dumped our bags in our apartment and took a stroll down to the Old Town Square in search of some food. Although it was close to midnight, the Square was packed with people enjoying the mild spring evening. We decided to brave a possibly over-priced meal, and pulled up a chair at one of the large restaurants on the square that had a free table, Restaurace U Orloje. We quickly ordered a couple of Pilsners….wanting to get into the swing of our Prague weekend. Yum. It was cold and tasty.
For supper we just wanted something safe and easy, so we both had schnitzel and potato. Nothing amazing, but entirely edible and prefect with the beer. Although U Orloje is one of those touristy kind of places, we very much enjoyed sitting outside in the Square people watching and getting our first taste of that fabulous Old Town atmosphere. On the night that we had been unsuccessful in getting a table at Klub Architektu we opted instead for Restaurace u Plebana, located across Betlemske Namesti. We were pleasantly surprised by U Plebana. It was a cosy and friendly place that serves up big plates of Czech food. There was a very talented piano man who really added to the atmosphere and made it a romantic meal.
Dinner consisted of a huge serve of meat, cabbage and dumplings for Alex, and I was a little more boring with lamb and potatoes. We even decided to live on the edge and ordered a bottle of Czech wine. It was fine….nothing to write home about, but a good accompaniment to our meals. All in all an enjoyable evening. This was the first restaurant I visitied in Prague and have returned many times, the staff are great the food is simple but very enjoyable and the prices are very good. It's one of these restaurants that you can guarentee will meet with your expectations, for this reason it can be busy so either phone in and make a booking or be prepared to wait for a table to become free. La Table, the restaurant on Ibis Karlin Hotel's premise serves excellent food for a very low price. Except the leg of duck, which is a tad dry, everything else on the menu is faultless. The goulash melts in your mouth, the smoked pork is perfect, the chicken Cordon Bleu is excellent, the beef medallions cooked in red wine sauce is tender, the poached salmon is exquisite, the pork neck steak is very good, the pork liver is tasty, and the spicy goulash soup is outstanding. Dinner for two including drinks come to less than 600CZK or €20. Restaurace u parlamentu is very pleasant place near Staromestske namesti. It offers good Czech food and beer for probably the lowest prices in whole area.
Moravian roast pork with potato dumplings and spinach is very good meal, but the most unusual and also very good is marinated beef in cream sauce. For those who are not about to experiment – roast leg of chicken would be ok.
