Finland has two official languages. About 93 % of the population speaks Finnish, whereas Swedish is the mother tongue for 6 % of the people.
So all signs are bilingual in Finland. For example "katu" is the Finnish and "gatan" is the Swedish word for "street". Most of the Swedish speaking Finns live in the coastal areas; including Porvoo.

    Gossip Mirror
  • Tip Rating:
  • Gossiping seems to be quite popular in Porvoo. In the Old Town of Porvoo you still find some houses with gossip mirrors, which were quite common in old times. A gossip mirror consists of two mirrors and is fixed to the wooden window frame. It enables people in the house to see what happens outside in the street in both directions.

Finland seems to be the country of mobile phones. You will see Finns phoning almost everywhere; especially at popular meeting places like train stations and cafes. A survey by Statistics Finland states that 91 % of Finnish households have mobile phones and 64 % of all phone calls in Finland are made with mobile phones (2004).
So be prepared that even your Finnish VT friends will receive many calls during a VT meeting.

    Nakki Kustaa
is the name of this place but it is not written anywhere. Only original local people know this name, as it is not written anywhere. The name comes from owner’s first name and food he sells. Like this: Nakki=Frankfurter, Kustaa=Gustav, the name of the old owner. Nowadays his dothers works in this place, I have understood so.

This is the oldest snack bar in Porvoo and I could say that among the oldest in the whole Finland. The customers of this snack bar are locals and taxi drivers. The selection of this snack bar is rather limited as they normally are in places like this.

On the list will be LIHAPIIRAKKA, which is minced meat (beef and porc) mixed with rice and put inside a kind of a donut, without the sugar and the hole in it. It costs 2 Euros.

Then they have NAKKI. In proper Finnish it is called Nakkimakkara. It is kind of a Frankfurter/sausage, which is cooked in water with black peppers. It will be served with ketchup and mustard. The mustard is homemade according to a secret Russian recipe. The grandfather of the owner got the recipe from a Russian Tsar Family and they still use the recipe for making mustard. It can be bought home as well! For drinks they have soda and milk in 2dl cups.

    Open:
Mon, Tue, Thu and Sundays 10am to 02am.
    Wed 10am-03am
    Sat 10am to 04am.

No tables, no seats. Stand and eat or take away. Very easy and VERY local.

Enjoy a summer day on a terrace like locals

    Terrace boat at River Porvoo

Locals enjoys from a nice sunny day at open air patios, which we simply call "terraces". Normally they serve little something to eat but mainly they sell drinks like beer, cider, soda but also some ice-cream.

There are plenty of terraces by the river, one on a roof top of Seurahovi hotel next to the main market square.

It is nice to enjoy a cider or a Gin Long Drink, which happens to be my favorite 'terrace drink' and watch people passing by.

This is very much a local habit at summer time. The ship on the photo here is a "terrace boat" called Glückauf. There you may enjoy your drink at the deck of the boat.

    Runeberg muffins
  • Tip Rating:
  • These are the Runeberg muffins, which are basically related to Porvoo, and I guess it is because Mr. Runeberg was living here. The Runeberg day is celebrated in Finland on February and on that day and week these muffins will be available all over Finland in coffee shops and stores.

    Observe Finnish way of life

Observe Finnish way of life at the local Market place, especially in summer!

This is something I enjoy doing: go to the market place in center Porvoo (next to the main bus station)on Saturday morning and go to this "van cafeteria" and enjoy cup of Finnish coffee and a chat with other people.

The price for a cup of coffee in this particuliar stand ("van cafeteria") is 1 euro and really worth it!

The market place is open from early morning (6am?) until 4pm, Monday to Saturday. On the market place there are also some local handicrafts, bread, pulla (=Finnish coffee bread), vegetables from local producers sold.

Rest your feet, chill out and observe people who pass by.

    Creator of Momins
  • Tip Rating:
  • The creator of Momins, Tove Jansson (1914 - 2001) lived in a small island near Porvoo. Before the World War II there nearby was a light house that has been a portrait for Momin's house. Jansson's island was very desolate - no trees at all.
