  • If you planning hiking, not too heavy staff, it’s nice to feel light and you usually do not need to carry water with you.

Good shoes is a must, even in the summer you will need a good jacket as it getting very cold at night, it has happened that our toothpaste was just about freezing in the morning. Also recommending a thick leather jacket or so, that the mosquitoes cannot bite through because they will get through your normal cloths, jeans and wind jackets.

In the local stores and gas station you can buy mosquitoes repellent etc. You will surely need it in the summer and just for the information, the mosquitoes here are twice the size of mosquitoes which are for instance in the southern Europe region.

What ever you have, take with you. You will never regret it. Don’t plan to buy additional items in Finland, they cost more here, but films are rather cheap. Buy the films already in Helsinki or the south of Finland, it might cost you more in the north and surely will cost you more in the Norwegian side.

Good sleeping bags; we always go to camp on the higher mountains in the Tunturi region or in the Norwegian side. The mosquito’s doe’s not like the cold and then you can sleep batter at night and get back to the valleys & rivers in the daytime.

    Based on Saariselka in December.....
    Lots of socks,
    Balaclava,
Hat which covers your ears, or hat and ear muffs,
Sunnies (not coz you get any sun! but sometimes handy to keep wind chill off your eyes),
    Scarf,
    Good gloves,
    Thermals,
Thermal oversuit or good sallapettes and ski jacket.
    Good non slip boots.

Please note. Children will get colder easier and they will find it harder to warm up and stay happy if you have a long day of activities. Better for them to be too warm than too cold.

Lipsalve, Vasaline and Hand cream- your skin can get really dry when you're in and out the cold and wind.
No Pharmacy in Saariselka so any medical supplies you may need take with you.

Whatever you have, plenty of amazing photo opportunities. Northern Lights, Sunsets and Sun Rises, Santa, Snow............

    Salt and Vinager crisps,
    Marmite,
    Ribena.

Uncomplete packing list for Lapland at summer

It is varying very much what you need at Lapland in different seasons. This an incomplete 'must' pack list for summer first (I will cover later more about the list; just ask if you like):

Backpack - 'rinkka' in Finnish (I personally prefer Haglöfs brand)
    - there is no much sense to drag luggages to the nature. Certainly you can bring your stuff in luggages to the accommodation place, but in Lapland nature it is very helpful to have some kind of backpack.

Water bag (from 0,5 l bottle to 20 l canister; depending your consuming)
    - Lapland has quite fresh river water; take some Puretabs for ensuring if you hesitate

    Durable trekking gear
    - good trekker shoes, which are designed to support ankles
    - long trousers
    - long shirt
    - wind- and rain-resistant upper dress (also for mosquitos), called 'tuulipuku' in Finnish
    - optional: rubber boots for going through rivers

    Insect oil

Maybe cortison if you are sensitive to mosquito biting

Knife or 'leuku' in Lappish language - you actually do not need Leatherman or Gerber at Lapland, but classical durable and sharp knife is very, very handy.

A tent - if you like to stay overnight cheaply (with no cost)

    Trangia camp fire set

    Matches and fire bricks ('sytytyspala')

    Compass

Some local maps might help fro trekking

and start to learn to make camp fire, as I try to advice in my Tips.

Heavy gear like in the image above:
    Gas springler
frying-pan (Trangia set is enough for minor treks)
