Popular Restaurants | Other Restaurants Tips | All Tips (3) Along the Kauppakatu are all the restaurants, must be some good ones in between. I wouldn't know, because I just got some food at the supermarket and ate it at the square at Kauppakatu.
I was sitting here on Sundayevening and was watching all these cars come and go with young kids in it. All they seem to do was drive up and down the street ('cause it was a dead and) again and again. Restaurant Sirius serves fine Finnish cuisine. Where possible, they use only local produce and ingredients including meat, eggs and dairy product. The restaurant is located in a prime location on a hill next to the Kajaani river with a view opening to the river and the castle ruins.
The functionalist style building is known by the name Koskikara (White-throated Dipper). It was designed by Eino Pitkänen and served as a residence to the managing director of the paper mill, Kajaani Oy. The most prestigious visitors to the house include the president of Finland, Urho Kekkonen and The Soviet Union, Leonid Brezhnev, who had lunch in the lunchroom of Koskikara.
The restaurant is open without a booking only for lunch from Monday to Friday between 10.30am-1.30pm. However, it is possible to book the restaurant for various occasions such as weddings, birthdays and dinners for the minimum of 10 people in the evenings (make sure to book before 2pm the same day). On Saturdays, they will cater only for groups that are larger than 15 and who have booked in advance. Closed on Sundays.
A typical lunch would consists of salad buffet and a variety of bread and rolls, 2 kinds of soup (fish or meat soup/vegetable soup), 2 mains (e.g. meat or fish/a vegetarian option), dessert or coffee. Practically all the items on the menu can also be made without lactose or gluten.
They also do special menus such as the regional Kainuu Menu and the traditional Kalevala style menu ("Kalevalainen Elämysateria") that takes you back several hundred years in history.
Currently, they also serve a special seasonal Autumn menu that feature 4 menu options

Pekka Heikkinen is not the most coziest of cafes to sit in, but their pastries are gorgeous (try a portion of the couldberry cake or if you dark chocolate, the sacher tart). They bake everything that they sell the same day. The bakery has been operating for over 90 years (It was established in 1913) and their award winning rye bread has been the best in the whole country several years in a row. They have introduced Cafe Latte and Cappucino on their hot beverages list a few years ago. They have also created their own speciality chocolate with 'tar' flavour. The idea is very off-putting, but it's got a funky taste and you cannot definitely get from anywhere else.
