 | Gyor Things To Do | Tips 1 - 10 of 47 | | Popular Things To Do | Other Things To Do Tips | All Tips (47) An interesting assortment of locally produced artworks, historical artefacts, period furniture and clothing, and treasures from various archeological digs in the area around Gyor. Unfortunately, virtually all of the museum's labels were only in Magyar, but I enjoyed the museum nonetheless. It was a bit like going through your great-aunt's attic - you never knew what you were going to find in the next room. The museum is located in one of the grandest old palaces of the city, and is worth a visit for the architecture alone. This "Marian Column" - a tribute to the Virgin and Child - stands in one of Gyor's main market squares. I wonder how official state atheism under Communist rule affected the practice of religion here in Gyor and elsewhere in Hungary? Certainly there is a lot of evidence today that Gyor has been an important place of worship and devotion for many centuries. In that regard, I'm glad the historical record wasn't obliterated by the communists. Leave a Comment

Gyor doesn't attract many tourists, so I was the only person inside the Cathedral for fifteen minutes or so. No - I take that back, the organist was there, practicing a Bach Prelude and Fugue. Gyor seems like a place where the Sunday morning Mass is still the highlight of the week for many people. Leave a Comment

The 8 metre tall Baroque monument to the east of the Cathedral was constructed in 1731, at the request of Emperor Charles III (1685-1740), by the Viennese court sculptor Antonio Corradini to a design by Joseph Emanuel Fischer. The monument shows the Ark of the Covenant held aloft by two angels; legend has it that the Emperor ordered it to be made as an act of atonement for the violation of the Blessed Sacrament: during a Corpus Christi procession a soldier who was chasing a criminal is said to have knocked the Ark of the Covenant out of the hands of a priest and smashed it. The church from the first Jesuits of Gyõr was built between 1634 and 1641 by the architect Baccio del Bianco. After the dissolution of the Jesuit Order the Benedictines became owners of the building complex (1802). Leave a Comment Address: 9022 Gyõr, Széchenyi térDirections: Szechenyi Square

Maybe the powerful walls mean that some high prelate was not very well-liked by the inhabitants... Leave a Comment

I was impressed by the cleanliness of this Hungarian town, and also by the way in which it was so clear that the people of this region took a great pride in maintaining the dignity and the beauty of their public works of art. Leave a Comment

The Marian Column is in the same square as the monastery. It depicts Mary and the infant Jesus with "globes" (or are they crowns?) atop their heads; and Mary seems to have a spear in her hands - fulfilling the prophecy of the angel Gabriel. Leave a Comment

The monastery was unfortunately closed for renovation when I was in Gyor, but the interior of the church - especially the ceiling paintings by famous Baroque painter Paul Troger - is said to be spectacular. Leave a Comment
