It lies in the valley of the Eger Stream, in the hill-country, which extends over the western foot of the Bükk Mountains. The small town centre is a pedestrianised area that features many brightly painted houses with iron balconies lining narrow, twisting streets. Ornate lampposts and hanging baskets of flowers decorate the cobbled lanes and squares and sculptures representing the battle against the Turks are a proud reminder of the victorious saga.
Eger is a Baroque town known not only for its history, mellow charm and vineyards, but also for its thermal baths. Visitors looking for a bit of time-out can unwind in the peaceful Archbishops Garden, a leafy park enclosing swimming pools and hot thermal baths. |
The center of the historical wine-producing region of North-Eastern Hungary is Eger. Its fort, which was defended by heroic warrioirs during European conquests of the Turks in the 16th century, offers an excellent view the beautiful downtown. The city, with its glorious historical past, minarets and palaces is a place of thermal baths, good food, wine and of course, good cheer. The Eger red wines - such as the renowned Egri Bikavér (Bull's Blood) - are characterized by attractive color and pleasant tannin acid content. During the several years of aging in large wooden casks in the cellars, these wines become fullbodied wines rich in aroma.
Aside from quality wines, there is a fine equestrian tradition in the region. Near Eger, at Szilvásvárad the riding farm where Lippizzaner stallions are stabled is well worth a visit. |
The town's administrative centre is the old market place, Dobó István tér (square), which took shape in the Middle Ages. On the east side nearest the Castle stands a statue of the heroic defender of Eger in the siege of 1552, István Dobó.
The Town Council building is a l9th-20th c. palace in the Eclectic (composite historical) style The former Minorite Church is a fine piece of Baroque built in 1758-71 to the plans of Kilián Ignaz Dientzenhofer, a Prague architect. Both the outside and inside features of this church with its graceful tower and an arched middle frontage reflect the splendor favored in the late Baroque period |

I had heard stories of religous oppression in eastern bloc countries, and was surprised at the number of glorious places of worship in Hungary. Some were in dis-repair and we often left donations for the restoration work.

This is the Post Office in Eger. I love sending and receiving postcards. I sent 20-30 each day. It is very hard to be witty on that many cards, but I came up with a wonderful idea, which caused our host no end of pleasure.
Foreign post card tip: Each day I would buy the local paper (in Hungarian of course) and I would write out the headlines on my postcards. I had no idea what they said, and neither did the recipients!! One of our hosts, Nagy Rudy, would read my cards and just laugh and laugh. He would read them out loud, translate, and breakdown in tears of laughter and joy. Leave a Comment |
