In the western boundary of the town there is a valley full of wine-cellars, where you can buy wine just from barrels (up to 2 euro per 1 liter). Since the cellars usually do not sell food in their neighborhood grew many restaurants. I recommend you to try Hungarian cuisine in one of the csarda, local traditional restaurants.

Vienna is known for pastries, though Hungary can't be too far behind. Whether in Budapest or Eger, one will more likely than not pass by a pastry shop. My advice - stop and eat the pastries! I had a frog (pictured), and it was hm hm good. Leave a Comment

We had a nice lunch in Eger at a restaurant in the Offi-Haz hotel to the east of the main square. Service was good, the food was good and the price was good too!
I tried pork medallions with potatoes while Ruth went for venison stew. I also had two halves of the excellent local beer, Gossar. The total cost was 3500 HUFs (about 15 Euro) for everything. After a great evening drinking wine at the Valley of the Beautiful Women we walked (a little unsteadily) back to Eger. I don't remember much about this walk other than we took some silly pictures and then ended up at a posh restaurant in the centre of town. I think it was called Udvarhaz and it was on the street leading to the castle.
We sat out on the terrace and chose the good value toruist menu which consisted of onion soup for starter, pork for main course and pancakes for dessert. We definitely shouldn't have had wine but the wine waiter was a nice guy and persuaded us to try a bottle of Cuvee Red - to be honest we didn't need much persuading.
After the wine waiter did his thing I was rather worried we had read the menu wrong and ordered an 18000 HUF bottle rather than one for 1800. I was even more worried when we tasted the wine and it was absolutely delicious. Though after 5 glasses in the Valley I suppose anything would have tasted nice. In the end all worked out well at 500 HUFs for everything. We woke up the next morning with sore heads and a hazy memory of the night before. Leave a Comment

For days ate only meet, so we decided to go for a pizza. But this restaurant is terrible. The staff is unpleasant to serve, the near company leaves after a quarter to wait. We didn’t leave a wait a little more. When finally the stuff came is bored and very unfriendly.
Finally the pizza was maybe the worst pizza we ever eat.

The place is in a dark basement type pub, lots of memorabilia on the walls lots to look at and lokes of jokes etc .... and when the food comes the portions are huge!! Well worth the wait and the money... oh and if you cant finish them they put them in a doggy -bag for you to take home!
