Nice woman valley
  • Tip Rating:
  • If You Like wine - This place is like paradise :)Yhe most known wine from this region is called EGRI BIKAVER. In My opinion - is one of the best wine from Hungary.
Many private cellars are in NICE WOMAN VALLEY, restaurants with traditional hungarian foods and live music ( gypsy musicians). Wine is cheap and in some cellars having Very Good taste ( i like red wine from cellar Number 46:)

    Cistercian Church
  • Tip Rating:
  • At the Szechenyi Utca (Street) near to the crossroads with Brody Utca (Street) the church stands in the place of an old Muslim mosque. First it was a Jesuits but after dissolved their order the Cistercians took it over. Now it is closed and under re-construction.

    Dobo Square
  • Tip Rating:
  • Dobo Istvan ter (the Stephen Dobo Square), the main square in the town, in the past was used as a city's market. Now, divided into two parts by the Eger River, is the center of Eger, with plenty of markets and restaurants. The two most remarkable buildings are the Minorite Church and the Town Hall. There are also two monuments in the square: the bronze statue of captain Dobo in the middle and the and the monument of heroes which defended Eger against Turks in the front of the Town Hall.

Sorry for the photo, the sun was whimsical!

    Inside Cathedral
  • Tip Rating:
  • In the gorgeous inside of Eger's Cathedral you can admire many decorations, paintings, reliefs, stained glasses, sculptures and skillfully realized details. The main alter-piece "St. John boiled in oil" was painted by Joseph Donhauser in 1835. The famous organ (the biggest in all the country) was made in Salzburg and are very often used: it is sounded daily at 11.30 a.m. (12.45 on Sundays) from May 15 until October 15.
But what I found really impressive was a painting on the main copula's ceiling. Just turn your head up!

    Lyceum
  • Tip Rating:
  • Opposite the Cathedral at the Szechenyi Square stands a huge building - Lyceum. Today used by the Eger's university (or rather a teachers' college), was built between 1765-1785 in Zopf style (baroque + rococo, although its front has features of classicism style) by Count Karoly Eszterhazy . There is the famous diocesan library which can be visited as a museum. In its collection you can find there e.g. the only Mozart-letter in Hungary.

    Cathedral
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Eger Cathedral (also called the Basilica) is the second biggest one in all Hungary. It stands at the Eszterhazy square and dominates the whole Old Town. One of the most magnificent examples of the Hungarian neoclassicism, had been built in years 1831-1836, by Jozsef Hild, a famous architect from Pest to order of Eger's bishop Laszlo Pyrker.

    Orthodox Church
  • Tip Rating:
  • The only one church in the town which is located with its back to the town's center. Built by the Serbian refugees in the end of 18th century with the special permission of the Emperor, Joseph II, can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10 a.m. till 4.00 p.m. The iconostas of the church built between 1789-1791is a real masterpiece.

    Minorita Church
  • Tip Rating:
  • In Hungarian - Minorita templon. It is considered as the most beautiful baroque building in all the country. Inside: the interesting altar, the frescos and the carving furniture. Since the Minorites were monks (in fact a branch of Franciscan order), next to the church stands their monastery. The Eger's Minorita complex was the first of this order.

    Ersek Garden
  • Tip Rating:
  • The garden was owned by the archiepiscopacy of Eger. The garden used to be much bigger than it is now. It was built by G?bor Erd?dy between 1730 and 1735, and fenced in 1769. The portal on Klapka Street still exists. This two-leaf gate with a footpath crossing in the middle was constructed according to Jozsef Francz's design. The railing was made by Henrik Fazola. The layout of the garden is of French style, with some plane trees that are several hundred years old.
