As I said, I really love this bridge. There are at least three reasons to walk accross it: (1) the view of Esztergom and the Cathedral is the best from the bridge, (2) it is "going abroad", Sturovo is nice, and food is cheaper than on the Hungarian side, and (3) the steel structure of the bridge's spans is really interesting. We went on Sunday to go to mass, there are signs warning tourists that they are not welcome during services. We suffered many stares as we entered, but when we joined in the stares dissolved into smiles. The music was terrific, and the power of the organ made you feel that God was listening.
Listening to the organ. A funny thing, the handicapped parking spaces were halfway down the parking lot. Be sure to go to the basement!! There are some surprises to be discovered. While there a tour group came in hit one highlight and left, and never saw the best thing! So take your time. Leave a Comment

Janos Vitez, a Hungarian Humanist, was born around 1400. He was educated in Vienna and he became tutor of the future King Matthias. Later, under Matthias's reign, he rose to Lord Chancellor and eventually to Archbishop of Esztergom. Leave a Comment

Water is a significant element of Esztergom's milieu. If the weather is nice, it's very likely you see rowers and small boats on the Danube as well as cruises or the Budapest-Vienna or Budapest-Bratislava hydrofoils. Leave a Comment

There is a narrow spiral staircase leading up to the top of the cupola. It is very narrow and quite an adventure when you meet someone from the other direction. It is not a time to be shy. The views make the climb worth the effort.
The views are spectacular. You can walk around the entire dome and get views of the town, the river, the countryside. Leave a Comment

The Mária Valéria bridge crosses the Danube river to connect Esztergom in Hungary and Štúrovo in Slovakia. The original bridge was constructed in 1895 but was damaged in 1919 by an accidental explosion. After being rebuilt in 1927, the bridge lasted until 1944 when the retreating German army destroyed the bridge. The most recent incarnation of the bridge was completed in 2001 with the assistance of a grant from the European Union. Leave a Comment
