    The Mária Valéria bridge crosses the Danube river to connect Esztergom in Hungary and Štúrovo in Slovakia. The original bridge was constructed in 1895 but was damaged in 1919 by an accidental explosion. After being rebuilt in 1927, the bridge lasted until 1944 when the retreating German army destroyed the bridge. The most recent incarnation of the bridge was completed in 2001 with the assistance of a grant from the European Union.
