Signifying the start of Watertown as you approach from the town center, the distinctive twin spires of the Vizivaros Plebania Templom (Watertown Parish Church) with the Primate's Palace next to it, give a dramatic entrance to the old town. The church was built in 1738, and is starting to look its age. Despite the dramatic view it gives from a distance, up close it looks a little run down, with broken panes and dark interiors. A very distinctive white church sits atop a hill just behind the Basilica. It's distinctive despite its small size, because of its pristine whiteness, neat classic lines, and its isolated and airy location on St Thomas Hill. The hill and chapel got its name from a church that was originally built there in honour of the martyr St Thomas Becket, whom the Bishop of the time had studied with at the University of Paris. The hill was also the location of a Turkish castle, which along with the original church, was destroyed long ago. Leave a Comment

Most people walk up to Castle Hill to see the Cathedral, but you can also visit the remains of the medieval royal palace. Originally from the 11th century, it's the oldest stone fortress in Hungary. It houses the Castle Museum (Varmuzeum) of the Hungarian National Museum (architectural and archaeological exhibition, history of the town). The monumental Basilica, built between 1822 and 1869 is the largest church of the country. In the sacrarium one can admire Grigoletti’s altarpiece, titled ‘Maria’s ascension’, which is the largest painting on a single canvas (13*6,5 m) of the whole world. The only medieval building of the cathedral that prevailed, one of the most magnificent buildings of the Reneissance era, the Bakocz chapel was built in the southern side of the Basilica. The shrines of high priests and burial places of archbishops can be found in the crypt below the church. This is also where Primate Jozsef Mindszenty’s relics were laid on 4 May 1991. Since then, the undercroft (crypts) has become a popular pilgrim destination. Leave a Comment

I booked all my tours on this site...Booked tour in order to get the 10-20% discount... The first tour stop is Esztergom, on the Danube. It is the centre of the Hungarian Roman Catholic church. The city is of historical significance; St. Stephen, the first Hungarian king, was born here, he was crowned in this town in 1001. The Esztergom cathedral, built in the 19th century, is the largest church in Hungary. Then drove thru the town of visegrad.....The birds view from Visegrad is truly breathtaking. The Romans built a fortress at the settlement located at the foot of the steep rocks of the Visegrad Mountains. The Lower and Upper Castle of Visegrad were built in the 13th century...after this had lunch at a very nice resturant.... The last excursion stop is Szentendre. The tiny town squares, meandering streets, Serb temples, baroque bourgeois buildings contribute to a uniquely picturesque, Mediterranean atmosphere. Today, Szentendre is the town of art. Many museums and galleries exhibit the works of artists who lived or currently live in the artists' quarter established in the 19th century. On the main square are the Holy Trinity Monument and the oldest Serbian Orthodox church in Hungary. I had only 20 minutes here....but I should have taking the last boat ride which was 6pm....oh well..next time.... Leave a Comment

Esztergom is situated at the part of the Danube they call the Danube bend where the river turns suddenly to the south in the direction of Budapest. It is much cleaner here than it is in Budapest and the countryside is scenic. There are also cycle paths here which I myself haven't seen but it seems like a great place to go on a bike trip. You can even go from one town on the Danube bend to another. There is info in English, Hungarian and German on a board at the Train station about the bike routes which sound like they are well taken care of. Leave a Comment
