If you have a car, or are not afraid of taking a bus trip check Kővágószőlős, a small village with beautiful rock formations (well hiking gear is recommended for this, but not a big trip), and there is also a hang-gliding start position, with friendly folks who don't hit you with something big if you land on their trees, but invite you to the pub for a beer afterward. :) Leave a Comment

There are many trails one can take up in the Meksek Hills and surrounding areas. I love just getting on a bus to one of the nearby villages like Cserkut or Siklos. The picture was taken in 'Eger Volgy', on the outskirts of Pecs, 2 years ago at the beginning of October on an Indian Summers day which was about 26 degrees warm. A restaurant up in Mecsek (the mountain north of Pécs) called Tettye - extremely good food, you get the typical Hungarian dishes to a very good price. This is a restaurant where tha locals go, and have done so for a long time. Across the street there are the ruins of an old monastery (?) and the view from here is ...breathtaking! Tettye Vendéglő 7625 Pécs, Tettye tér 4. Tel.: 72/310-438 Fax: 72/310-438 Leave a Comment

Orfü - a lake up in the Mecsek mountains. I'm sure a lot of tourists go there, but still. You can swim in the lake, or in a pool that is built in the lake. You can also go fishing around there. Beautiful surroundings... Leave a Comment

Pécsvarad is a little town not far from the city of Pécs, on a hill in the centre is the ruin of an abbey which celebrates the start of the Hungarian State, in it is a small museum with a few objects and lots of photos showing the types of architecture used in religious buildings in Hungary. Szigetvar ( the island Castle) is 33 kilometres west of Pčcs on road number 6. It was built at the end of the 14th century on an island in the Almas Patak river and it had its hour of glory in 1566. It was then that 90,000 Turkish soldiers under the command of Sultan Suleiman the Great attacked it. Zrinyi Miklos and about 2,000 men were garrisoned in the castle. They surrendered after a siege of 33 days and a battle followed with heavy Turkish losses. Close by is the Hungarian/Turkish friendship park. If you are passing by its worth a visit. Leave a Comment

Mysterious Roman burial vaults, Turkish mosques, slender minaret, fine Zsolnay ceramics, grandiose Csontváry paintings, decorative Vasarely patterns, almond trees blossoming in early spring, restaurants and cafés with pleasant atmospheres - this is all Pécs, the 2000-year-old city with Mediterranean climate and mood lying at the southern foot of the Mecsek Range.
