I loved the porcelein at the Zsolnay factory. There is a museum there of their wares and it is a must see, even if you don't buy. Leave a Comment Theme: Gifts

Arkadok is one of the largest shopping centers in Pecs. It's all indoors, so during bad weather, it's a perfect place to hang out. There are all kinds of stores inside, Books, Leather, Local art, Electronics, Fashion, Shoes, beauty, Flower, Pet shop, Travel agencies, Photo, Pottery, and many, many more. Upstairs is the eatery section where you can find from the Chinese food to Pizza, soups, sandwich and traditional Hungarian Pastries. Photography is not permitted and security is everywhere, so it is a safe place to be.

If you have a EU health Insurance card, you may get 50% off if you ask the doctor to write your 20 digit number on the doctors prescription and present your passport at the Pharmacy. Not all Pharmacies can understand the 20 digit number so find the biggest Pharmacy or try several, as you don`t have a Hungarian Health Insurance number (12 digits) you have to find a Pharmacy that has a computer that understands the new system. Be patient, unless you have to get stroke medicine which costs a fortune then don`t be stingy for a few Euros, you should be prepared when you travel abroad. Leave a Comment

The market held in Pécs every Sunday morning is a must see. If you are lucky enough to be here on the first Sunday of a month, you can visit the Nagyvásár (Grand market), where vendors come from all over Hungary, a few even from Romania, Croatia or Serbia. If you are here on an other Sunday, it will be just the regular market. Don't be disappointed, it will be still big enough for you. My favourite part of the market is the rows and rows of antigues: china, and glass products, Zsolnay porcelan, old silverware, old coal irons, old sewing machines, coffee grinders, tools, bronze statues, old clocks, old coins (even from the Roman times!), banknotes, antique furniture (often surprisingly cheap), old painting, old photos and post cards, used books, old locks, embroidered table clothes, folk costumes,... impossible to list it all. The larger part of the market is for new things, everything you can imagine. Clothing goods are cheap, but mostly not very good quality. I love buying honey here (great variety, low prices). Vowen baskets are popular items. You can also buy fruits and vegetables. Eat a lángos or hurka for lunch at one of the stools! Not the healthies foods, but it they are worth it! You need them if you want the complete market feeling. :-) The market is held on the Vásártér (Market place) in Kertváros (a district on the Southern part of Pécs) and is open from about 7 am to 1 pm, gets very crowded between 10 and 12. Though you can easily get here by bus from downtown, the buses coming here are usually very crowded, the ride is not pleasant, you are better of taking a taxi. Call Volan taxi, they are reliable. It should cost about $10 from anywhere downtown. Ask the price before getting in, just to be on the safe side. If you come with your own car, there is a huge parking lot available. You have to pay 500 forints (about $ 3) for the parking. When on the market, watch out for your vallet! If you can, take a Hungarian friend with you, try to look Hungarian and keep you mouth shut while your friend negotiates the price of the item you would like to buy. Prices of antiques are often higher for foreigners than for Hungarians. One should try to bargain, but one may not succeed, some sellers fix their prices. If you can get 20% off, feel very lucky. You cannot bargain at other parts of the market, only at the antique section! If you are not in the shopping mood, don't bve afraid, noone will force anything on you - the market is still worth seeing.
See listed above.
