The türbe of Baba Idris
  • Tip Rating:
  • The sepulchral monument (türbe) of Idris baba is situated in the picturesque garden of the children's hospital. Idris baba was a doctor and he lived in Pécs in the second half of the 16th century. He must have come to Hungary with the conquerors or the first settlers. After his death the residents started to worship the famous doctor and his tomb became a place of pilgrimage. When the Turkish occupation ended the Jesuit Order took possession of the türbe. In 1693 it was converted into a chapel and was named after Saint Rókus who protected the city against the plague. When the epidemic was over the army came into possession of the building and stored gunpowder in it until 1913, when the restoration work began.

    Early Christian Masuoleum
  • Tip Rating:
  • The roads leading out of Sopianae, the Roman predecessor of Pécs to the north and northeast were edged by cemeteries. Very significant sepulchral structures have been found since 1780 from the Barbican to Széchenyi Square. These were constructed in the 4th century A.D. This two-storey structure of the cemetery consists of a subterranean crypt and a chapel built above it. The walls of the crypt are decorated with murals imitating marble incrustation, Bible related themes (The Fall, Daniel in the lions den, Paradise).

    Mescek Hills
  • Tip Rating:
  • These are beautiful hills which lie at the edge of Pecs. On one of the hills is a TV tower which you can go up. All you need to do is follow the signs to get there! There are also many good hiking trails in the area. The monument on the left is made of the three main types of stone found locally. You will see these used in the commerical and residential buildings in Pecs.

    The Turkish cesma, drinking-fountain
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Turkish drinking-fountain, originally name "cesma", is situated outside the city-walls, right opposite the tunnel. Actually, it is more sofisticated kind of well with running water.
BTW, the word of "cesma" for the drinking-fountain is in use in Serbia, Macedonia and Bosnia the countries which were under the Ottoman's occupation too.

    The church of Paulite
  • Tip Rating:
  • The founder of the Pauline Order, the only order of Hungarian origin, was Bishop Bertalan, who lived in the 13th century. The church was built on the initiative of Mihály Zembruszky, Pauline monk, therefore its name is Pauline Church. Károly Weichinger designed the one-steepled, rubblestone church building, which was completed in 1938. An arcade links the detached 26 meter high belfry to the three-aisled church building.

  • This Turkish built Dzsami is probably one of the best preserved buildings from the the time when the Ottomans were occupying Hungary. In 1975 it was reconstructed to it's original form because in the 17-th century the building was donated to the Christian church. The original Turkish paintings can be seen today. This is right at the upper section of Szechenyi Ter and can be seen very nicely in the dark too. Please click on more photos under the image to see a night shot of this place, Thank you!
